Belated Blog Tour: The Ex-Mas Holidays by Zoe Allison + Excerpt & a Giveaway!

 Happy Release to Zoe Allison!

I am SOOOOO sorry I missed The Ex-Mas Holidays release day on September 26th! The whole family (myself included) were under the weather. Dang sinuses! I love fall, but I don't love the sinus pressure and junk that comes along with it!

Anywhoddles! Today I am celebrating Zoe Allison and her lovely book, The Ex-Mas Holidays! I love a good second chance romance but one set in the Scottish Highlands? Sign me UP!

Get ready for a love story that will thaw even the frostiest of hearts, as Maya and Sam navigate awkward snowball fights, unexpected mistletoe moments, and the undeniable pull of a shared past.

About the Book

It’s hard to escape your ex when you’re working together over Christmas in the Scottish Highlands, but being stuck together might be the best possible present in this sparkling new contemporary romance.

Maya Bashir is dreading her drive home for Christmas and having to explain that she’s just left her high-paying job and a long-term relationship, so a brief detour to her friend’s festive party doesn’t seem like such a bad idea. Until Maya walks in to find the last person she wants to see. Sam, the boy who broke her heart eight years ago. And he’s serving drinks. Naked.

Sam Holland is working an extra job on the sly to help his friend get by. But little did he expect Maya Bashir to come barrelling back into his life, learning about his secret side-hustle and taking back her old job alongside him at his daytime role as a ski instructor on the slopes of the Scottish Highlands.

As both Sam and Maya realize that their reason for heartbreak so many years ago wasn’t entirely as it seemed, they must learn to stand up for what they want the most…or else miss their second chance at love.

One

Where the hell are you, you foot-crippling little devils?"

Maya rummaged in the passenger-side footwell among various bags in order to find her heels, kicking off her trainers in favor of the more fitting party footwear.

Upon opening the car door to a blast of ice-cold air, she paused to put on her jacket before climbing out. How is it possible for the temperature to drop about fifty bloody degrees when I've only traveled forty miles north? Goodness knows how much colder it'd be when she continued on up the road later that evening.

As she strode out along the gentle incline of the driveway, she was distracted by the imposing size of the massive mansions on the cul-de-sac. Her feet went out from under her, and she only just managed to grab hold of a railing, narrowly preventing a fall onto her backside. "Shit!" Looking up, she checked that none of Kirsty's posh neighbors were around to hear her yelling that expletive. A glance back down confirmed the subtle shimmer of ice on the paving. "Bloody hell. Stupid winter weather."

A thought crossed her mind-was it a good idea to leave all her worldly possessions in the boot, outside, in the dark? It's a nice area. Should be okay.

There was something sad about the fact that her whole life fit in the back of her car. Sacrificing all the big items of furniture to Rich had seemed sensible when they divided it up-he was going to a new flat after all. No point wasting money on storage when I'm going to be a sad twentysomething living in my childhood bedroom for the foreseeable future. It's not as if there had been loads of stuff anyway. Their flat and ultimately their mortgage had been modest with her having chosen to work at a small accountancy firm and Rich opting to take on a finance role for a charity.

Though there had been a couple of items that had sentimental value, and were smaller. Such as the vintage Royal Albert afternoon tea plate that she would have loved to bring home in order for her and Liv to place scones upon it and pretend to take tea with Mr. Darcy and Mr. Bingley. But it had been a gift from Rich's mum, therefore Maya had relinquished it to him. Rich didn't even like afternoon tea, or scones. And he certainly wasn't partial to either Darcy or Bingley. But still, it was the right thing to do and, in any case, she was getting too old to be pretending that she was a character in a Jane Austen novel.

Maya picked her way to the front door, arms outstretched and legs akimbo, like the most inept trapeze artist in existence. There were a couple more slips, and she heartily wished that she'd kept those damned trainers on, but she'd come too far to turn back now.

"Come on, Maya. Grow a pair of ovaries." Fixing her gaze on the doorway, and wondering where this newfound habit of talking to herself had come from, she continued on her mission. Without further incident she managed to complete her quest, and arrived on the sanctity of the doorstep, in order to ring the bell.

Blowing out a relieved breath, she watched it puff into little clouds of condensation, misting up the beautiful stained glass window embedded in the door. The realization that she wouldn't know anybody at the party except for Kirsty hit, and she fiddled with her charm bracelet.

The door opened with a flood of warmth. "You made it." Kirsty grabbed hold of her in a tight hug.

"Hi," Maya said, her voice muffled by Kirsty's sequined shoulder. "You look fab. And your new house is fantastic."

Kirsty released her with a smile, transitioning into a curtsy. "Why, thank you." Straightening up, she winked. "Come in. That's everybody here now. And I do mean everybody."

Maya stepped inside to secure less slippery footing. Before she could ask why Kirsty had emphasized the everybody, she was ushered down the wide hallway and into a large living room. The surroundings resembled something out of a show home, all clean lines and glass.

Kirsty pointed to each of her friends in turn. "These are my neighbors Donna and Karen. And this is Isabelle and Una from work . . ." She went on, introducing Maya to around ten women.

Fixing a smile on her face, Maya attempted to cover the fact that the names were immediately slipping her mind like water through a sieve.

Kirsty held out her hands. "Let me take your coat."

Maya removed it, adjusting her gold off-the-shoulder top. "Can I help with anything in the kitchen?"

"Absolutely not," Kirsty said, giving her a mock-stern stare. "It's all in hand."

For some reason, that statement raised a raucous cheer from the small crowd of women, which almost made Maya jump. It was nice that everyone was able to relax and not be on kitchen duty, but she wasn't sure why it merited such an energetic response. What were they all on? Snowballs and Christmas cheer, most likely.

The others began chatting among themselves, and Kirsty touched Maya's arm. "What drink order can I put in for you?"

Maya wished she could get a hearty slug of whatever was fueling the rest of these women, but there was driving to be done, and disapproving fathers to be faced. "Just a Diet Coke, please. I'm not staying over."

"You're driving back to Glenavie tonight?" Kirsty asked.

Maya played with her charm bracelet, her stomach tightening. "I figured it was better to face the music sooner rather than later."

Kirsty embraced her, giving her a squeeze. "Hopefully you'll settle in quickly. But are you sure you can't stay? The roads are icy."

Maya shook her head, plastering a smile on her face. "I'm in the mindset to get there now."

Kirsty nodded. "You can backtrack at any time if you have a change of heart. Maybe you'll fancy joining in the fun a bit more once you see what I've got in store."

Maya raised her eyebrows. Kirsty certainly seemed rather cloak-and-dagger this evening.

"Have a seat," Kirsty said, with a wink. "I'll be back in a sec."

Maya sat on the massive, soft gray sofa next to a couple of the other guests. The room was so stylishly decorated that it was difficult to keep her envious eyes off all the furnishings. It was clearly a new build, and Kirsty had the place done out to the nines.

A smiling woman wearing a black jumpsuit shifted over to take Maya's hand in a shake. "I'm Isabelle."

Maya returned her smile. "Maya. Nice to meet you."

Isabelle sipped her wine as she nodded toward the large living room window. "I can't believe how cold it's getting."

"I know," the woman next to Isabelle piped up. "I can't believe that it's so soon until Christmas." She leaned across Isabelle to address Maya, her black tasseled top nearly dangling into Isabelle's drink. "Hi, I'm Una."

Maya shook Una's hand across Isabelle's front, nearly clotheslining poor Isabelle in the process. "Great to meet you."

Una let out a loud sigh. "I haven't gotten nearly enough Christmas shopping done yet."

"Tell me about it," Isabelle replied, rolling her eyes. "I'm never going to get it done in time."

Maya's shoulders relaxed a little. Typical Scottish winter conversation made talking to new people easier. "Same. I've not even bought one present yet, because I'm in the middle of moving home. Literally. All my stuff is outside in the car." She stopped talking, aware that her mouth was running away with her.

"Really?" Isabelle asked, raising her eyebrows. "You're moving house tonight?"

"Yeah," Maya replied. She wished she had a drink in order to soothe her feelings of inadequacy-something stronger than the Diet Coke that Kirsty was fetching. She cleared her throat. "I'm moving home because I lost my job."

"Aw," Una said, reaching across Isabelle to take Maya's hand and nearly falling into Isabelle's lap. "Sorry to hear that. Especially at Christmas."

"Ah, it's fine," Maya said, waving her other hand and plastering on a grin. "Worse things happen at sea."

Why she was comparing her plight to a maritime incident, she had no idea. Since when did sailors lose their jobs, boyfriends, and flats, plus have to go home with their tails between their legs to face their disappointed fathers? Though, granted, Moby Dick probably would be worse. Or Jaws. Or Godzilla.

Isabelle leaned back, shooting Maya a sympathetic look. "But still. That must be very stressful. Where's home?"

"Glenavie," Maya replied, coming out of her sea monster ruminations. "Not too far from Glencoe."

"Ski country," Una said, a dreamy expression on her face. "Lovely. At least it'll be nice and Christmassy."

The image of her Highland hometown entered Maya's mind, adorned in twinkly Christmas lights and dusted with snow. Christmas in Glenavie was her favorite time of year. The idea of that infused a little comfort into her veins.

Kirsty reappeared with a couple of plates of nibbles, passing them around the room. "There's more stuff in the oven, so help yourselves. Oh, and, Maya, your drink's coming."

"No rush." Maya sat back to listen to her new acquaintances. It occurred to her that Kirsty had said her drink was "coming," so who was fetching it if not Kirsty?

She heard the door open behind her. The other women's voices rose by a number of decibels, plus an octave or two. Turning her head to find out what the kerfuffle was about, Maya was greeted by the sight of a firm and perfectly shaped naked male bottom across the huge floor space. A well-toned man had his back to her as he handed out drinks, not wearing a stitch of clothing except for a tiny apron around his waist, the strings of which were entwined with tinsel.

Maya laughed, finally realizing why Kirsty had been behaving in that "nudge-nudge, wink-wink" manner. Plus, why the women seemed drunk on more than just alcohol. They were also high on the sight of a hot naked man. She raised her eyebrows, turning back to Isabelle and Una. "Kirsty's hired one of those naked waiters, I see."

"Yes," said Isabelle, smiling. "He's been preparing and serving our drinks. What a treat."

Maya shook her head. "That's what she meant when I arrived. She was being all cryptic and like 'everybody' is here."

Isabelle laughed. "She is rather pleased with herself."

"I'm rather pleased too," Una said, eyeing the man's back. "He's bloody gorgeous."

"I wouldn't know," Maya replied with a shrug and a smile. "I've not seen his face yet."

Una sighed. "The back of him is as appealing as the front." She placed her hand onto her forehead in a mock swoon. "Sandy-brown hair, ravishing amber eyes, and a sexy closely trimmed beard. My favorite."

Isabelle snorted. "Don't pretend that you've been looking at his face, Una. Not with that perfectly chiseled torso."

Una laughed.

Sandy-brown hair and ravishing amber eyes. Maya had known a man of that description before, minus the beard. Though she'd been eager to forget him, and that task had taken her a little while. The realization hit that, very soon, she might see him on a more regular basis. Another reason to dread going back.

Kirsty was gesturing to the naked waiter. "The Diet Coke is for the lady over there, on the sofa." Kirsty pointed toward Maya.

"Here you go," Una whispered. "Brace yourself."

Maya smiled, shaking her head. Who was this guy? Chris Hemsworth? She was sure he couldn't be that devastating.

The man turned. Maya's smile froze on her face, her jaw dropping as she took in his familiar, handsome features with a sinking heart. "Sam?"

His face fell, the creaminess of his cheeks staining pink. "Maya."

Two

The chatter across the room continued, but Maya's section fell silent. Kirsty, Isabelle, and Una stared at her, clearly confused as to how she knew hot-naked-guy.

She glanced around, double-checking that there were no secret cameras and that she wasn't on one of those prank TV shows. Unfortunately, it seemed real.

A million questions ran through her mind. The most pressing of which was Why the hell are you naked in my mate's house? Though it was closely followed by Why did you lead me on, then dump me? However, she didn't feel able to voice those queries, not in front of all these strangers. Especially when she hadn't seen him apart from in passing over the last eight years.

Maya cleared her throat. "Hi. You look . . ." Naked? Hot AF? "Well."

Sam raised an eyebrow, assessing her with a cool stare.

She shifted in her seat. Despite him not wearing a stitch apart from that tiny apron, it felt as if he had the upper hand, towering over her while she stayed put on the sofa. Maya tried to get up, but for a moment she wasn't sure that her legs would hold her.

"I am well, thanks," Sam replied, his face perfectly neutral. "And you?"

Bloody hell, this is beyond awkward. "Mm-hmm. Fine, fine." That minuscule apron was practically at her eyeline, and she couldn't bear it any longer, so she summoned the power to stand. However, she was then greeted by a better view of his naked torso and muscular arms, not to mention his amber eyes, which were still penetrating her inner being like some sort of alien mind probe.

"Anyway," Maya said, fixing her eyes on the doorway. "I've got to pee. Just had a long journey from Glasgow, you know? Tiny bladder and all that." She squeezed her eyes tight in discomfort as she walked across the room, closing the door behind her to pause at the bottom of the stairs. Feeling that it was safer to retreat up there, she climbed them, heading into the bathroom and shutting the door. She perched on the edge of the bath, taking a breath. This was worse than Moby Dick, Jaws, or Godzilla.

There was a knock at the door, and Kirsty stuck her head around it. "Are you okay? What's going on?"

Maya blew her fringe out of her eyes. "Don't ask."

Kirsty entered, taking a seat next to her on the uncomfortable porcelain. "How the hell do you know the naked waiter?"

Maya rubbed her temples. "Remember freshers' week, when I told you I'd not long been dumped by that guy at home?"

"Hmm," Kirsty said, frowning. "Not really."

"It was at that tequila night at the students' union."

Kirsty pursed her lips, clearly not recalling.

"I got off my head and sang 'Wrecking Ball' by Miley Cyrus at the karaoke and then cried to you about it in the toilets," Maya said, raising her eyebrows at the apparent revelation that Kirsty hadn't been paying attention to her display of teenage angst. Or perhaps that was a good thing, given how she'd murdered poor Miley's song.

The door opened, and she stepped out, nearly falling back when a bundle of energy rushed at her. She laughed and leaned down to pick up her younger brother, happy that she could do so without her arm killing her.

"Where have you been?" he asked.

She cuddled him close. "What do you mean where have I been? I was out doing tough girl stuff."

He leaned back to look at at her, both of his chubby little hands cupping her face. "You are a tough girl," he said.

"Yes, I am." She kissed the top of his head.

At two years old, Andrew Scott Kyllwood, also known as Drew, was pretty much the cutest thing on the planet. He had Zane's black hair and Janie's blue eyes, and already he could speak at a fifth-grade level. He was kind, and he was funny, and he was all his father's son.

"Dad!" he yelled, partially turning in Hope's arms.

Hope tossed the boy to Zane, who easily caught him and swung him in a circle. "How quickly they move on," she said.

Review: Along Came Holly (Mistletoe Romance #3) by Codi Hall!

Happy Book Birthday to Codi Hall!

I am SO in love with Codi's Mistletoe Romance series and I am so excited to have Holly and Declan's story!

They've been enemies throughout the series but their chemistry is off the charts despite their throw-downs about Holly playing her Christmas music too loud!

It's an amazing series and I recommend reading every book!

There's Something About Merry (Book #2) is my favorite but this book is a close second!

I hope there are more books in the series!

You'll absolutely fall in love with the whimsical town of Mistletoe, Idaho and all of its quirky, messy, hilarious townsfolk! I know I sure did!

About the Book

Holly Winters is not about to let her grumpy neighbor Declan steal her holiday joy…even if he does look rather handsome under the mistletoe.

Holly Winters owns the jolliest holiday shop on Main Street and this season is shaping up to be the best yet. The only pit in her figgy pudding? Declan Gallagher, the owner of the hardware store next door. He's the scroogiest man in all of Mistletoe, Idaho. Then Holly's revenge prank escalates into an all-out war with her Grinchy neighbor, and the situation turns sticky when she realizes she needs his help.

Declan can't believe the nerve of his oh-so-cheerful neighbor hiring him to set up her holiday lights display, but the money is too good to pass up. Despite his utter loathing of excessive decorations, he throws himself into getting the job done, only to encounter sabotage at every turn. To his astonishment, Declan finds himself championing the very woman who used to get under his skin. Then one rooftop kiss has him thinking maybe the season's traditions aren't as heinous as he believed. Declan's heart has grown three sizes since Holly came along, but how can he admit he's falling for the one woman he shouldn't want?

My Thoughts

The books in Codi Hall’s Mistletoe Romance series were first released annually as an audiobook special and then the print/eBooks were published a year afterward. Since I’m not a big audiobook person, I have been (im)patiently waiting to read Along Came Holly. And it was so worth the wait!

Along Came Holly is a perfect enemies-to-lovers story backdropped by a small-town full of Christmas cheer, literally named Mistletoe! There’s laughter, hijinks, everything Christmas and a love story so powerful, it’ll melt the iciest of hearts!

Declan has been such a mystery and in Along Came Holly, we get to peel back his layers, seeing why he hates Christmas. It’s heartbreaking, bittersweet, and endearing. There’s so much more to Declan than his gruff disposition and his constant scowl. I just want to give him a big hug!

Holly is a firecracker and larger than life. She’s passionate about everything she does and I admire that about her. Holly is also a fierce protector of her family and those she calls her own. She’s courageous, confident and has the most wicked sense of humor! I would totally be BFFs with her because I definitely don’t want to be on the receiving end of her ire or that fiery temper she brandishes as easily as her love and loyalty.

I absolutely LOVE this story! Holly and Declan are business neighbors and have been feuding since the beginning of the series. I love their banter and their chemistry is off the charts! It’ll take a Christmas miracle, and some help from the gang in Mistletoe to keep the peace between Holly and Declan and… help them discover that what they both needed was always right there in front of them. Each other.

This story has ALL the feels and will have you laughing, crying and falling in love right alongside Holly and Declan. I highly recommend this and every book in the Mistletoe Romance series! It’s got everything you need: Christmas, small-town, family, fun, crocheted peens, loveable pets, a Christmas tree farm and so much more!

Happy 10th Anniversary to Louder Than Love by Jessica Topper!

Happy 10 Year book birthday Louder Than Love!

Louder Than Love was first published through Berkley's Intermix line on September 17, 2013 and brilliantly written by Jessica Topper!

I remember first reading this book and falling head over heels for Adrian and Kat and this beautiful story of love, loss, forgiveness, redemption, and Rock 'n' Roll!

Jessica Topper broke the rock romance mold with her 2013 debut novel LOUDER THAN LOVE. Her follow-up romantic comedy, DICTATORSHIP OF THE DRESS, was named one of Publishers Weekly's Best Books of 2015.

Louder Than Love was originally written as a standalone but I was over the moon when Jessica expanded this world, creating the Love & Steel series and penning three more novels!

I am as just in love today as I was when I first read Louder Than Love, even more so!

I invite you all to give Adrian and Kat a chance! Louder than Love is currently FREE for a very limited time! Grab your copy today!!!!

My Thoughts

First published in 2013, Louder Than Love is given new life with a new cover and is finally available in print in 2020! I have championed this story from my first reading and it remains still to this day, one of the best love stories I've ever read! I encourage everyone to take a chance on this amazing story. It's an emotional journey of heart, loss, love, strength and absolution.

I cannot tell you how much I love this book. A widow and her very young daughter, Abbey, are trying to move on after the tragic death of her beloved husband. The flashbacks to the times Katrina’s husband was still alive just about killed me. So much life and love cut short so fast, a reminder that we should cherish and appreciate what we have because it may not be there tomorrow.

Three years after being widowed, Katrina meets a half-drunk Adrian Graves whom she’s hired to play children’s songs he wrote 10 years before at her local library's children's event. As the two batter their way through a relationship, conquering their demons becomes more complicated than they both realized; especially when Katrina, or Kat as she’s affectionately called by Adrian, refuses to face hers. Can love blossom when past hurts resurface?

I completely fell in love with this book. My heartstrings have been tugged and abused and kept hanging on until the very end. I loved the complexity of each character. The plot was intricately designed and beautifully done. I also love the music references the author used including The Beatles’ songs and how Katrina’s daughter was named Abbey after Abbey Road.

I grieved with Kat’s struggles as she tried to pick up the pieces and learn to live again after the terrible accident that changed her and Abbey’s lives forever. I loved how vulnerable Adrian was as he revealed his past to Kat. It crushed my heart to hear his shame and his self-hatred, but rejoiced as he found something to live for and saved himself from the destructive path he was on courtesy of his Rock ‘n Roll lifestyle.

The story is written in first person from Kat’s point of view and I really wished there were some scenes with Adrian’s viewpoint. I would have loved to know what was going on in his head. The plus side though is that Adrian is so very passionate and forthright with his feelings that I can understand why the author didn’t feel the need to write his point of view.

I absolutely LOVE this book! I was completely floored. The story is emotionally charged, heart-wrenchingly precise and brilliantly executed. Keep an eye out for this author! Louder Than Love is a must read for anyone who believes that not only love, but patience, strength, perseverance, courage and faith conquers all.

About the Book

In this powerful debut novel, a young librarian grieves the loss of her husband…and discovers a love that defies classification.

It’s been over three years since a train accident made a widow of Katrina Lewis, sending her and her young daughter Abbey back to the suburban town of her youth…the only place that still makes sense. Lauder Lake is the perfect place to hide and heal.

Recluse rocker Adrian “Digger” Graves survived the implosion of his music career, but his muse has long lain dormant. Until Kat hires him to play at her library—not on the basis of his hard rock credentials but rather, because of the obscure kids’ TV jingle he wrote years ago. In a case of mistaken identity, Adrian stumbles into the lives of Kat and her comically lovable daughter.

Using tattoos as a timeline, Adrian unfurls his life for Kat. But as the courtship intensifies, it’s unclear whose past looms larger: the widow’s or the rocker’s. Will their demons ever rest, or will they break these soul mates apart?

Kat meeting Adrian for the first time

I stopped midsentence, noticing a man had breezed in moments ahead of the Rainbow kids. He had a softshell guitar case slung over his shoulder and was inquiring at the circulation desk.

I bet he thinks one of those old biddies at the desk is you! Leanna giggled. I took a moment to size him up. Not particularly tall, but of slim stature. His dark blondish hair, at least from my view, was somewhat raggedy, but perfectly respectable for a musician. He was wearing a black button down styled after an old-school tux shirt, with thin ruffles running down the front. His jeans were dark wash and looked expensive. I suddenly felt small-town and shoddy. I wished I had thought to pluck my eyebrows and give my chipped toenails a fresh coat of polish.

The clerks were gesturing and pointing toward the programming room. "oh, but wait, here she comes now," Amelda announced as I hastily approached. He turned, displaying a face much more weathered than I had initially noticed from afar. Tiny wrinkles fanned from the outer corners of his eyes, and his hair had quite a bit of gray streaking through the blond, especially at his sideburns. For some reason, I had anticipated him being younger than me. I recovered quickly, sticking out my hand.

"I'm Katrina Lewis, thanks for coming."

"Lew?"

"No, Lewis."

"No, I mean... do you 'ave a loo?" His watery blue eyes widened to stress the urgency of the situation. "I'm afraid I'll burst if I don't go for a slash."

"Oh. . . yeah, down that hall." It took me a moment to register his accent and his slang, yet my embarrassment over the situation was fairly immediate. I stood rooted to the spot after he thrust his guitar into my hands and rushed off. Leanna was still standing there, a witness to the whole encounter. "He's . . . um . . ." I searched for the right words.

"Old? British? Drunk? or D) all of the above?"

"He's older . . . but he's kinda cute," I admitted, surprising myself. "Come on, drunk? It's four in the afternoon at the public library! Please. Go get a seat. I'll be in there in a minute."

I waited at the end of the hall for my charge. After a moment, he came out of the bathroom, swaying slightly into the wall as he pulled a tin of mints out of his pocket. "Altoid?" he offered. The smell of Jack Daniel's and his peppery cologne, which was somehow subtle and intense all at once, were noticeably foreign to the hallowed halls of my local library. I got the feeling this was not the sort of creature who normally frequented places with drop ceilings and fluorescent lighting; perhaps not even the sort who functioned much before sundown.

"You are drunk."

"And you"--he popped two of the curiously strong mints into his mouth--"are beautiful."

"Jesus Christ."

"I'll sober up soon . . . and hopefully, you will still be beautiful." He grabbed back his guitar with a smile.

Chapter One

After her parents and the London Druids told Ferne relentlessly never to set foot on the Isle of Skye, and that the Druids who called the isle home were not to be trusted, she ignored them all to follow an instinct she continued to question.

The closer she got to Skye, the more her stomach churned. She could turn back. She had yet to reach the isle. Sure, her brother knew where she was going, but Mason would accept if she returned before going farther. Yet she didn’t turn her car around. She kept driving.

The bridge that connected mainland Scotland to the Isle of Skye came into view. There was still time. All she had to do was pull over and turn around to head back to England and Mason. Generations of Druids knew never to come to Skye. It meant immediate banishment by family, though Mason would never do that to her. He supported her. Always. Still, she felt a gnawing uncertainty that made her want to retch.

“Last chance,” she whispered as she came upon the bridge.

Her foot lifted from the accelerator, but she kept driving. Her heart slammed erratically against her ribs when she reached the top of the structure, and then she was on the descent. Before she knew it, her tires rolled onto the Isle of Skye.

She shook so badly she thought she would have to pull off the road, but as quickly as the shaking had begun, it slowed and then stopped altogether when she was on Skye. Ferne’s gaze swept around her, taking in the shops, houses, cars, and people, not to mention the unimaginable beauty everywhere. The navigation system directed her toward the cottage she had rented, but she ignored it and just drove. She wasn’t supposed to be here. Not only because it had been ingrained in her from her earliest memories but because there was a really good chance the Skye Druids would force her out as soon as they learned who she was. Ferne would take whatever time she had to see Skye while she could.

The sun remained hidden behind soft gray clouds that intermittently sputtered drizzle. The sea whitecapped in some coves, while others had smoother water. The mountains rose like stony giants watching over the isle. There were lochs, waterfalls, and a landscape of such rugged splendor that she began to understand why so many tourists frequented the isle. But there was something else, as well. Magic.

Ferne had once heard a London Druid whisper about how a friend of theirs had said they could sense the magic on Skye. She had dismissed the claim as an exaggeration. Now, she knew they hadn’t lied. While she wouldn’t say she actually felt the magic, there was something different in the air. And she wanted to feel more of it.

The only thing missing was her brother. Mason loved their Druid side more than she did. She had shied away from her magic for several years. Not Mason. He went all-in on everything. There were no half-measures for him. He would love it on Skye.

Her intention to drive and take in the beauty of the isle was soon cast aside by her need to get out and experience the majesty for herself. The instant she saw the signage for the Fairy Pools, Ferne turned off the road and headed toward them. It was a main tourist attraction, but she didn’t care.

Her mobile rang as she maneuvered down the lane to the nearly empty car park. She glanced around, searching for the pools. All she saw was a path. The insistent ringing brought her thoughts to a halt. She didn’t need to look to know who called. Only one person ever rang her.

She answered through her car. “Hey, Mason.”

“Is everything all right?” His deep voice held concern. “It took you longer to answer than normal. By my calculations, you should’ve reached Skye. Have they given you problems?”

Ferne maneuvered her Mini into a parking slot. She squashed the irritation that rose at her brother’s overprotectiveness. She was the same with him. They had been that way since they’d lost their parents in a plane crash. “I’m here. The drive was uneventful.”

“Have you gone to the house yet?”

She grinned, shaking her head as she put the car in park. “I haven’t.”

He released a long sigh, and she could well imagine him running his hand down his face as he did when he was restless and agitated. Or worried. “There’s still time for you to come home. No one has to know you’re there.”

“I’m not afraid of them.”

“Ferne,” he said, reminding her of their father when he chided her. Very British, with his voice dripping disappointment.

She closed her eyes to the gorgeous backdrop of the Black Cuillin mountains. “I had the same argument with myself the entire ten-hour drive here. I have to do this.”

“You’re all I have left.”

“And you’re all I have, but that doesn’t mean we should shut ourselves away from the world. Or stop doing what’s right. The Druids on Skye are in danger. If they’re toppled, the rest of the Druids around the world will fall.”

Another sigh. “This is a dangerous thing you’re doing.”

Ferne opened her eyes. “So is what you’re doing.”

“Excuse me?” he said after a slight pause.

“I admit, it took me longer to sort through things because I was preoccupied. If it weren’t so important for me to be here, I would’ve turned around and come home.” She took a deep breath and released it. “Tell me I’m wrong. Tell me you’re not looking into whether Mum and Dad’s accident was more than that.”

There was silence on the other end of the line. Then a soft, “Bloody hell.”

“What you’re doing is much more dangerous, Mas. You should’ve told me.”

“The elders—”

“Can bloody well sod off,” she snapped. Then she pressed her lips together. “They want to control everything and everyone. Neither of us has ever been satisfied with the reports from the plane crash. If the London Druids had anything to do with the accident, then they’ll be watching you.”

“Us.”

She winced at the truth of his words. “They don’t care about me. It’s you they’ve always had their eyes on.”

Mason chuckled, surprising her. “You sound just like Mum.” The smile left his voice. “Just as you have to do what you’re doing, I need to do this. I know what I’m doing. Trust me, Ferne.”

“I do.”

“I’m going to get us answers, and while I hate that you’re on Skye without me to watch your back, it’s better that you’re not here. Not after they kicked you out of London.”

She rolled her eyes. “If they do anything to you, I will burn them to the ground.”

“That’s how I feel about the Skye Druids.”

She grinned. “I almost feel sorry for anyone who comes against us.”

“I don’t,” he replied, no humor in his voice. “It’s what happens when tragedy strikes a family, and all they have is each other.”

Ferne wanted so much to reach out and hug him. “I’ll ring once I’m at the house.”

“Stay in touch as you promised.”

“I’ll be just as worried about you.”

He paused. “Find out all you can about the Druids there. Just…”

“I know,” she replied. “Be careful. The same goes for you.”

She disconnected and turned her attention to the landscape. Her worry for Mason wouldn’t lessen until she returned to the family estate in Derbyshire, but she couldn’t do that until she finished on Skye. But now that she was here, she knew it would be harder to leave than she’d ever anticipated.

Ferne unbuckled her seat belt and stepped out of the car. The air was damp and chilly, made more so by the soft wind. She grabbed her purse and walked around to open the car’s boot. After she’d tucked her keys and mobile into her pockets, she hid her purse and dug out her hiking boots from her suitcase. Once she’d changed shoes, she put on her coat and secured the car. Then, she walked around the vehicle.

“So. This is Skye,” she murmured.

She started across the road to the trail that wound through the land. A path that millions of feet had walked. Like all of Skye, the pools had originally been for the Druids. But there was no stopping change. Now, the Fairy Pools were a popular tourist stop for anyone who visited the isle. Not that Ferne could blame them.

After tripping a couple of times, she had to force herself to look away from the mountains and watch where she stepped. She crossed a small trickle of water that grew wider and deeper the closer she got to the pools. In her excitement, she hadn’t taken the time to look around to see who was about.

As much as she dismissed Mason’s worry, he had a point. Many wouldn’t want her on Skye. Ferne paused next to a boulder that towered over her and took out her mobile. She recorded a video, turning in a slow circle to get everyone in. From what she could tell, only a couple with two young kids was at her back toward the car park. As for the other car besides hers, she guessed it was the lone figure in the distance. She couldn’t make out if it was a male or a female, but she was on guard regardless.

Ferne continued walking. She contemplated getting pictures for Mason, but she couldn’t tear her eyes from the land. With every step, she thought about the generations of Druids who had walked the path, seeking the pools. This was the land of her ancestors, a territory that had beckoned to Druids long, long ago. And she finally understood why.

She also understood why the London Druids were so adamant about no one visiting. The land was stunning, yes, but it was also magical. It felt like home. The magic within her recognized Skye and found contentment here, which meant she was relaxed and comfortable. After years of being twisted with grief, it was like coming out of hibernation. The air was fresher, the wind like a caress upon her skin. Her steps were lighter, her mood brighter.

A few minutes later, she passed the young family. The kids, twin girls, held hands as they walked, singing in what she thought was Swedish. The mother and father gazed adoringly at their children and flashed her a quick smile. Ferne knew how well some could deceive, so she once more pretended to take pictures and watched the family out of the corner of her eye until they were gone.

She reached one of the first waterfalls. She stood for long minutes, simply watching the rush of water as it poured into a waiting, crystal-clear pool. As she climbed higher, the waterfalls became grander, the pools bigger and deeper, and the rocks below larger.

She spotted one that jutted out in the distance and headed there so she could stand over the waterfall and look down the gorge where the water had cut into the rock and land, carving out the pools. A glance around showed she was alone. She looked behind her at the car park and saw only her Mini. She had the pools to herself. She almost broke out in a dance. If Mason were here, he would’ve egged her on. Her father would have, too. Only her mother, laughing all the while, would’ve hurried them along.

Knowing she was alone, Ferne lowered her guard and took her time climbing the path. A smattering of rain came quickly and ended just as rapidly, but even that couldn’t get her to return to her car. When she reached the rock she had seen, she lowered herself onto it, letting her legs dangle over the side. It was quite a considerable distance down.

Ferne leaned back on her hands and considered Rhona, the leader of the Skye Druids. She probably should’ve been Ferne’s first stop, but she would go see Rhona first thing in the morning. It was already late afternoon, and Ferne still needed to get to the house she had rented.

She lifted her face to the sky and closed her eyes. The magic of the isle pulsed here. It was what had initially drawn the Fae when there had been an alliance between the Skye Druids and them. The rumors swirling around the London Druids was that an alliance might be intact once more. However, whether she could believe anything her old group said was something else altogether.

The London Druids had their fingers in a lot of pies. They believed they were more powerful than the Skye Druids, who probably didn’t even know they existed. Every group of Druids around the world compared themselves to Skye. It was hard not to when it was the land on which the Druids had settled in the beginning.

Until her ancestors and countless others had been banished from Skye forever.

Yet here she was, wading into dangerous territory to save the very people who had turned their backs on her relatives. Ferne had tried to reach Kirsi, one of the Druids on Skye, and while she had connected with her through magic, she wasn’t sure if she would go to Rhona as Ferne had urged. There was also a darkness swirling around Skye that prompted Ferne to come herself.

She wasn’t here just to save the Druids on Skye, but all Druids. She would need to convince Rhona of that—however long it took. She wasn’t leaving until she knew the Skye Druids had their enemy in hand. Ferne hadn’t told her brother that she was prepared to fight alongside the Skye Druids to achieve that, but he already knew. Because he would do the same.
