The Ghost of a Chance, a Krewe of Hunters novella from New York Times bestselling author Heather Graham & 1001 Dark Nights is now live!

Having run into the bank to take out cash for her son’s school fair, Angela Hawkins Crow is surprised to find herself in the middle of a hostage situation. The hostage-taker is none other than Billy Mendelson, a young man suffering after a violent armed robbery attack at his home.

Angela read about the crime but is mystified by his behavior, even as he hustles her into a vault with several others. Billy was a stellar student and so much more before the events of that fateful day. How can he subject others to such violence?

Thankfully, Angela realizes someone else in the bank might be able to help her bring it all to an end—without any injuries. It’s a ghost of a chance, but one she must cling to if she wishes to save the hostages and the young man so damaged by what has befallen him.

One thing her years with the bureau had given her were classes in self-defense, negotiations, and profiling…

Classes that taught her when self-defense was an option, the best way to speak during negotiations, and how to deal with someone who was so badly on the edge that every single care had to be taken to keep oneself or a roomful of people from being killed.

Of course, she could only pray that she was putting the pieces together properly.

“Please,” she repeated. “We will all do every single thing you tell us to do.”

He whispered something, but she barely heard him.

“I’m sorry.”

He moved closer to her as if his words were meant only for her.

“My mother did that—everything those bastards said. And they killed her and my dad anyway.”

“But that’s them, Billy. Not you,” she told him. Her words were almost a whisper now. This had come to something that was between the two of them.

“You know who I am.”

“And my heart bleeds for you. Billy, I know you probably won’t believe this, but I can help you. I can employ every resource in the world to trap the monsters who hurt your parents,” she told him. “Really—”

“The cops were all over it.”

“Not to brag, but I’m almost a genius with the Internet. I can find out what others can’t. And I have friends who are just as good.”

“No, no, no. I’ll be gone to the moon—well, South America, at least. Somewhere far, far, away. And I’ll start over completely. Or I’ll be dead,” he told her.

“Then we’ll get everyone into the vault now, and when you’re gone, I’ll still try to find justice for your parents,” she vowed.

He looked at her for a long moment, and she thought maybe he believed her. Right now, there was only one objective: to keep these people alive.

And she would do anything in the world to make that happen, praying that, somehow, she might keep herself alive, as well. There might be one problem, though. Jackson and Corby knew where she was. She had simply run to the bank to pull out some cash for Corby’s class’s fundraiser for the victims of the latest storm that had wiped out hundreds of homes. They’d planned on buying pastries created by all the kids’ different parents and turning their purchases into an impromptu party for those in the Krewe who were in the area at the moment.

Billy smiled suddenly. “You’d best all behave,” he told her. “Because I’m not alone. Say hi, Kenneth.”

At the front of the bank, one of the men seated on the floor waved a hand in the air and rose, reaching beneath his jacket as he did.

He, too, had a gun. From her distance, Angela couldn’t tell what type of handgun it might be.

But regardless, it carried bullets and death.

Her family knew she was here. And while she had incredible faith in Jackson, she prayed he was able to control the situation, and that no one barged in, guns blazing.

Because that would surely cause a bloodbath.

Release Blitz & Review: In The Air Tonight by Marie Force

 Happy Release Day!

The truth can set you free. And get you killed.

In the Air Tonight, an all-new thrilling small town, romantic suspense standalone from New York Times & USA Today bestselling author Marie Force & Blue Box Press is now live!

I was there. I saw what you did.

Blaise

I wasn’t supposed to be there that night, but my friend Sienna talked me into going to the party in Land’s End so she could spy on her boyfriend. While hiding out in the woods, we witnessed an unspeakable crime. And we did everything wrong afterward.

Connections run deep in our small town.

I was pressured into keeping my mouth shut, even though every part of me objected. I assumed I’d always do the right thing in any situation. I was wrong about that and a lot of other things.

I was wrecked by what I saw and how the victim was treated by kids I’d known all my life. I’ve been sick over it ever since, even as I moved on, far away from the town where I was raised.

Fourteen years later, I learn that the guy who committed that unspeakable crime is running for Congress, and something in me snaps.

I can’t bear the weight of that knowledge for another second.

Finally, I report what I saw, and all hell breaks loose for me and others who were at that long-ago party. Some of them will do whatever it takes to keep the truth from coming to light…even if they have to kill me.

In the midst of an epic battle, a new love gives me the strength to stay strong, to fight for my life and to right a terrible wrong.

Content warning: A sexual assault storyline may be upsetting to some readers.

I shower and change into jeans and a sweater before heading out to return to my childhood home for the first time since my dad died of a heart attack seven years ago. That’s the only time I’ve been home since I left for college, a stance that’s caused significant friction in my family. They’ve asked for years why I stayed away until they quit asking and stopped reaching out. I still talk to all of them, but we’re not close. That’s how I wanted it, for reasons only I know, but now… If everything comes out, will it drive us further apart or bring us closer together?

I don’t know how that’ll go, and the not knowing only adds to my anxiety as I drive across the bridge into Hope.

Every nerve in my body is on full alert as I take the familiar roads to home, traversing the same route I did on that long-ago night after witnessing the crime that changed everything.

I park behind my mother’s silver Toyota Camry and take a long moment to look at the two-story Colonial home where I was raised. It’s been painted a darker shade of grey, and the shutters are now black. They were red when I lived there.

Mom comes out of the house, smiling with excitement that’s been sorely lacking in her since Dad died. She’s visited me often in the city, but I know she’s yearned for me to come home.

I hug her on the sidewalk.

“It’s so good to have you here, my sweet girl.”

“It’s good to be home.”

My Review

Riveting!

Marie Force weaves an intricate tale where one horrific decision creates a disturbing ripple effect wreaking havoc in its wake. Nobody gets out unscathed.

In the Air Tonight is a powerful read with multiple narratives that help shape the novel into a vivid three-dimensional reading experience. The storyline is engaging, dynamic, purposeful, and meticulously detailed.

The character development is excellent and many of the characters are multifaceted, complex, and morally complicated. In some instances, there is no clear line between “good” guys or “bad” guys. It was fascinating watching the characters struggle (or not struggle) with the difficult situations they find themselves in. Weighing their beliefs, values, morals, and norms against the influence of their environments, and the unfortunate outcomes that follow.

Checking your trigger warnings are strongly suggested. SA, and the trauma that accompanies it is the theme of the book and may be difficult for some readers

In The Air Tonight immediately grabbed my attention and held me captive until the very end. The suspense is thrilling, the romance is delicate, and the plot is explosive! Highly recommend it!

For years, there was only him. The boy I’d loved with his shining blue eyes and a laugh that could brighten the darkest of days.

We were one, he and I. Two halves of a whole.

That’s what he’d always said.

That’s what I’d always believed.

Together, our childhood days had been marked with laughter and sunshine. Our teenage nights with heat and hunger, the days with plans and promises, caresses and kisses.

We’d shared our dreams. Our hopes. Our bodies.

We discovered passion in each other’s arms. There was trust. There was love.

And there was betrayal.

That’s when my world tilted without warning. He was gone, with only a scribbled note as proof he’d existed at all. His absence like a wound upon my soul.

I thought I’d never see him again. The boy who’d once been mine. The man who’d disappeared, taking my broken heart with him.

But now he’s back, swathed in a cloud of danger and betrayal, tied up in a conspiracy that could destroy everything I hold dear. Cold where once he was warm. Hard where once he was soft.

Deceitful. Dangerous.

Desirable.

I want to hate him. I want to hurt him as he hurt me. And yet the bond we shared still tugs at my soul, and all I can do is hope that I have the strength to hold fast to my mission. To fight the man he has become…and not lose myself in the memories of the man I wish he was.

His fork clattered on his plate, the sudden sound surprising me so much, I gave a slight jump as Jamie turned fully to me.

“Right, we’re here.”

Oh dear.

I wasn’t sure what “here” meant.

But I was sure I didn’t want to be there.

He carried on. “I know you don’t want to talk about it, and I’ll give you more time, but I do want to talk about it. However, for now I’ll just say, I can have you as I’ll allow myself to have you.”

As he’ll allow himself to have me?

What on earth did that mean?

“And in so doing, I have you,” Jamie continued. “You mean something to me. You’re mine. You’re a part of my life. You’re a member of my family. And I think you know I take care of those I love, Nora. That being the man I am, I cannot countenance this jackass annoying you or taking your time or infiltrating your life in any way that does not involve the children you share. Am I being clear?”

You’re mine.

I take care of those I love.

You’re…

Mine.

Those…

I…

Love.

“Nora,” he called. “Am I being clear?”

Release Day Blitz & Review: A Vampire’s Mate by Rebecca Zanetti

 Happy Release Day!

In the immortal world, the thrill of the hunt can turn deadly.

From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Rebecca Zanetti comes a new story in her Dark Protectors/Rebels series…

There’s nothing Jasper Maxwell likes better than a good chase. He is patient and cunning, and he is known as one of the coldest hunters in the immortal realm. As a vampire with a hint of demon blood in him, he stands out even amongst the finest trackers in the shifter world. So the fact that his mate has managed to escape him for the past five decades is something that keeps him intrigued and more obsessed with every passing year. The game is beyond delicious until a century old enemy resurfaces, putting his sweet little mate in danger. At that point, he has no choice but to secure her.

Leah Ferry enjoys immortality almost as much as she thrills at the cat and mouse game she’s playing with the Maxwell hunter. Once human, she figured she’d live her life wearing pearls and vacuuming in pressed dresses only to be thrown into the immortal world where freedom is intoxicating. On a mission to take down degenerate humans and make them pay, things go wrong, so per her usual arrangement, she starts to run. But this time, her sexy and deadly vampire mate stands in her way. She quickly learns that the sensual chase between them was nothing compared to the real danger coming for her.

Excerpt

“I’m called Jasper Maxwell.” He studied her and waited.

She’d never heard of him. “What a lovely name. I’m Leah Ferry. Why am I not dead?”

“I gave you some of my blood.”

She winced. “You what?” That made no sense. While she’d heard the Nazis conducted experiments that nobody understood, healing blood seemed too good to be true. Impossible, really.

“I’m a vampire, Leah, with a hint of demon thrown in.” He looked deadly serious.

“Ah,” she said. “Of course you are.” She had to get away from this man. While he had saved her life, he apparently had serious mental problems. She needed to get on those skis. “Peter and John…” she started.

Jasper shook his head. “They blew up with the bridge. There was no way to save either of them.”

It hurt. They’d been good friends and even better spies. Pain filled her chest. Yet another agonizing loss to add to her list. Soon, she’d have no one left. “I understand.”

His gaze narrowed. “You accept reality quickly, don’t you?”

“One has to as a spy.”

“Have you always been a spy?”

She tried not to cough because her chest felt tight. “I spent four years as a housewife wearing dresses and pearls while vacuuming.” She often missed the person she had once been. Even if the world centered itself, she’d never be that carefree girl again.

“Four whole years?” he asked. “Are you still married?”

The pain of the first of her many losses still echoed inside her. “I was. My husband died two years ago, almost right after we joined the war effort.” She missed him; they’d been great pals. Never again would she allow herself to get that close to another person.

“So now you’re a spy by yourself?”

She looked toward where the bridge had been. “I had friends, but now I’m on my own.”

“I could get you to safety.”

“I don’t want safety.” For some reason, she’d been given a second chance, and she was going to fetch those skis and find her way into Poland to aid the resistance. “Do you want to help us?” She didn’t know him, and he seemed unhinged, but he had saved her life, and they needed all the help they could get.

A veil drew down over his eyes. “Sorry, I’m on my own path right now. There are wars you don’t know about.”

“I can only handle one,” she said. “A vampire war, huh?” She tried not to sound terrified.

In answer, fangs dropped in his mouth. His eyes swirled an unreal silver through the blue and green and then returned to normal.

Her body hurt too much for her to feel true shock. So, it was true. Was she concussed? “Oh,” she said lamely. “I’ve heard stories. Whispers, really. But I didn’t believe them.”

“You should have.”

Review

I am such a fan of Rebecca’s Dark Protectors world and every time a new story comes out, I gobble up every word!

Leah is a strong, fierce mate whose stubbornness gets the better of her. Jasper is a tall, hunky vampire with an equally fierce protectiveness and antiquated ways of thinking on what a mate should do. Jasper has a dangerous job but he wants Leah safe at home while he goes out and has all the fun. I mean, he means well, but he obviously doesn’t know who he mated if he thinks Leah will be the good little mate waiting at the door for her male to come home.

Leah has a purpose greater than herself, she’s not ready to settle down with Jasper, even though she's had eight decades of freedom.

Leah and Jasper’s interests cross paths in Paris and they team up to take care of some super bad baddies. While Leah has taken advantage of the extended life afforded vampire mates, she’s not as physically strong as she should be because she hasn’t been in close proximity to her mate, Jasper. It’s a learning lesson for all as the pair stumble their way through cobblestone streets… and their relationship.

A Vampire’s Mate is a fun, fast read that will leave readers wanting more!

“So, why does Gray think your boss is a jerk?” Liv asks me as we walk into the department store.

“I don’t think he’s a jerk, but I’ve only known him for a week.”

Sidney scowls at me. “Why would Gray think that, then?”

“I guess Derek has a reputation for being hard to work for.” I shrug and hold up a navy-blue dress, but Stella takes it out of my hands and puts it back on the rack.

“That’s for someone in their sixties,” she informs me, shaking her head.

“Thanks. Anyway, I admit Derek can be abrupt and short, but he doesn’t bother me. At least not so far.”

I glance over at Liv, who’s watching me.

“What?”

“I’m telling you, you like him,” she says, narrowing her eyes.

“Look—”

“He doesn’t just not bother you. You’re hot for him.”

“Is he attractive?” Sidney asks, reaching for her phone. “Hell, I’ll google him. What’s his name?”

“Derek Langley,” I reply and bite my lip. This is fun. And a little nerve-racking. “He’s British. So, he does have a sexy accent.”

“Oh,” Sid says, turning the phone so the others can see. “Yeah, he’s fucking attractive.”

Hot,” Stella agrees. “Dang, Maya, you should go for it. Wait, is he married?”

“He doesn’t wear a ring.” I consider that, tapping my finger on my chin. “Of course, not everyone does. I don’t think he’s married.”

“I can’t find any evidence of a wife,” Sidney says, tapping on her phone some more. “Unless it’s recent.”

“He’s my boss,” I reply, shaking my head. “Sure, there’s some chemistry there, but I work for him. I don’t think that’s ethical.”

I’ve caught him looking at my lips several times, and when we stand close together, he shoves his hands in his pockets as if he’s restraining himself to keep from touching me.

But maybe that’s all just in my head.

“You said yourself it’s only a thirty-day assignment,” Liv says, waving me off. “I say take those thirty days and have fun with them.”

“We’re going straight to the lingerie department,” Stella decides.

“You guys.” I laugh but don’t stop them from pulling me to the intimates section, where they choose lots of lacy, silky, beautiful things for me to try. “What if I’m being silly, and he wants no part in anything sexy with me?”

“Number one, he’d be stupid,” Sid says. “And number two, if he’s not interested, someone else will be.”

“You have a point. Okay, let’s do this.”

Release Blitz: The Bodyguard and the Bombshell by Lexi Blake

 Happy Release Day!

She’s chaos and he’s just the man to handle her.

The Bodyguard and the Bombshell, a Masters and Mercenaries: New Recruits novella from New York Times bestselling author Lexi Blake & 1001 Dark Nights is now live!

The Bodyguard…

Nate Carter left Australia’s elite SASR unit after a tragic accident. Shattered by the experience, he thought taking a job in the States might be a good way to start over. His father’s former employer, McKay-Taggart, has a position for him in the bodyguard unit. He never imagined himself risking his life for celebrities and the wealthy, but it will do for now. It will also give him a chance to reconnect with old friends, including the girl who’d been like a little sis to him ten years before.

These days, however, his feelings for Daisy O’Donnell are anything but brotherly.

The Bombshell…

Daisy O’Donnell is a girl on a mission, and it does not include falling for one of her brother’s best friends. She has plans, and while chaos always seems to follow her, she’s determined to see this through. Daisy finds herself in need of a bodyguard when a job goes terribly wrong. She’s sure her dad will find someone suitable, but she didn’t expect a big, gloriously masculine Aussie to show up ready to take a bullet for her. Maybe spending some time with Nate Carter won’t be so bad after all.

An explosive match…

Thrown together by danger, Nate and Daisy can’t resist the insane chemistry between them. But when his past and her present collide, they must decide if they can hold it together or go their separate ways forever.

“I was helping out a client,” she began.

“Uhm, Mr. Taggart, I would like to make it clear we didn’t hire Daisy as a private investigator.” Her bosses were here, too. Harlow and Ruby sat at the opposite end of the table, and Harlow seemed to be the one who wanted to set the record straight.

“She was supposed to answer the phones.” Ruby frowned her way.

She was going to have to soothe her bosses. Things had done what they so often did in Daisy’s life. They had gone awry.

To top things off, her brother was somewhere in the building. Aidan had been the one to drive her up, and he’d told her he needed to go talk to his newest roommate.

Nathan Carter. Big, gorgeous Nathan Carter, who’d barely known she’d existed past being his friend’s obnoxious sister.

She hadn’t seen Nate in years. Was he still stunning? He probably had a girlfriend.

“Daisy?” Her mother’s voice brought her out of her reverie. “Uncle Ian asked you a question.”

Of all the grave faces around the table, it was her aunt and uncle who broke the mold and looked highly amused.

“I asked how you went from answering the phones to taking down a drug cartel,” Uncle Ian said, his lips curling up. He leaned in like he was ready for this story.

The auction was my last chance.

“Tonight I’d planned on having dinner with a client and his wife, but I could cancel if you’re not up to it,” Rhodes offered.

I shook my head. There was no way in hell I’d be having my new fiancé cancel things on my behalf. The goal was to ensure he wanted to keep me, not toss me back out to the wolves. The contract was clear. If either party wanted to get out for any reason, there was always the option. I only got the full seven mil if I signed on the dotted line, officially got married, and stayed through the three anniversaries after that.

However, if he wanted to bail before the first year was up, they’d deduct what he owed me based on the time we were together. Right now, he’d already paid the deposit of $250,000. Once we got married, I’d score the first installment of that seven mil. That money was going to set me, my two siblings, and my mother up with an amazing life. Then everything we suffered would just be a bad memory.

Which reminded me, “When are we getting married?” I asked.

He frowned and cleared his throat. “I, uh, huh… I honestly hadn’t thought that far ahead. As you know, it wasn’t part of my plan.” “Contract states we are supposed to be married within thirty days of signing the contract. After that, we are supposed to have consummated the marriage within two weeks. Maybe after dinner we can tack on a quickie drive-through wedding?” I suggested.

“You want to get married today?” he croaked.

“Why wait?” I stated flatly.

He started to pace the small room, then ran his hand through his hair repeatedly. “I feel like we need more time to connect. And to be honest, I don’t think I could go through with a wedding ceremony if my daughter wasn’t there. You haven’t even met Emily yet.” His shoulders slumped.

“Technically, I met her at the airport.” I reminded him.

That was the wrong thing to say. Because suddenly, he stopped pacing and slumped into the single chair in the corner of the room, put his elbows to his knees and his head in his hands, looking utterly defeated. “Shit, that’s right. She might actually remember you. What the hell are we going to tell her?” He lifted his head, his face a mask of worry. “I married my pickpocket?”

Damn, the man had a point.

“Uh, that wasn’t something I’d thought through just yet,” I admitted weakly and sucked in my bottom lip while I started to consider each possible scenario.

He lifted a hand, gesturing toward me. “Exactly. That’s why we need to discuss these things. Emily will be with Alana and Christophe for the next two weeks. We have until then to figure out what we’re going to do about introducing you to my daughter and the actual ceremony.”

Which meant I had to wait to get the next payout.

I groaned under my breath. It wasn’t an ideal situation, but none of this was. All I knew was this man wasn’t going to marry me quickly. He wanted his beloved daughter to be a part of it. Which was really sweet, but the exact opposite of my own plan. Regardless, the only way we were going to get through any of it was one step at a time.

“First things first: breakfast. I’m thinking bagels and coffee then we hit up my house to start packing. I need to settle up with Sam anyway. Then, we’ll meet with your clients for dinner. After that, we’ll figure it out.”

He looked up from where he’d been staring at his shoes, likely contemplating all his bad life choices. I knew that look well and recognized it when I saw it.

“Bagels and coffee?” he reiterated.

“I know a great place.”

His lips twisted as he stood. “Lead the way.”

Do you really like baking, or is that something you made up so women would find you endearing?”

“No, I enjoy it. It’s relaxing.” He picks up his burger and meets my gaze. “You really like fishing?”

“I love it, or rather, I love ice fishing. My—” I cut myself off.

“Your?”

“When I was growing up, I would go with my best friend’s dad and him almost every weekend in the winter. There is something magical about being in that little hut, waiting for a fish we would cook right there after pulling it out of the water.” I shrug. “I haven’t gone in a long time, but that is one of my favorite memories from when I was a kid.”

“Have you ever gone deep-sea fishing?”

“No, have you?”

“I go whenever I get the chance.” His gaze wanders over my face. “What are you doing tomorrow?”

“Nothing. I have the day off.”

“Do you want to go out fishing with me?”

“Are you serious?”

“I never joke about fishing.”

“Then, yeah. That sounds like fun.”

“All right.” He sets his burger down and takes his cell phone out of his pocket. I watch him type something, and then he sets it aside and resumes eating until it dings a moment later. After he picks it up and checks the screen, his eyes meet mine. “Does eight work for you?”

“Sure.” I dunk one of my fries into some ketchup.

Dropping his gaze, he quickly texts something back before lifting his burger once more.

“We’ll meet the charter company I use in the morning, and they’ll take us out.”

“It must be nice to be rich and famous,” I joke, then cringe because it’s obvious that who he is is a sensitive topic for him. “Sorry, I shouldn’t have said that.”

“Don’t be.” He shrugs. “I deal with that kind of shit from my family all the time.”

“They give you a hard time about it?”

“Constantly.” He smiles. “My brother is the worst.”
“So, when you say you play pro hockey, I’m guessing that means you’re pretty good.”

“I don’t suck.” His smile is tinged with a bit of cockiness.

“I don’t know much about hockey. How long have you been playing?”

“Since I was a kid. My dad bought me my first pair of skates when I was four. I joined my first team when I was seven and have been playing ever since. You’ll have to come to a game when the season starts up.”

“I’m not really a fan of sporting events.” I hated watching Kirk play football, so I avoided his games like the plague, which probably made me a pretty crappy girlfriend. I just didn’t enjoy the violent aspects of the sport and would sit there the whole time with a pit in my stomach, knowing that one wrong hit could cause irrevocable damage. And knowing what little I do about hockey, I imagine it would be the same thing.

“What sports do you like?”

“None.” I tip my head to the side. “That’s a lie. That sport they play in the Olympics, where they sweep that black ball thing with brooms down the ice, is pretty cool.”

“Curling is not a sport.”

“It’s in the Olympics, so I’d guess they’d disagree with you on that topic.”

I listen to him laugh, the deep sound just as attractive as he is, especially when his eyes crinkle at the corners. The dimple in his left cheek, which I didn’t notice before, shows ever so slightly. Ignoring the flutter in my lower belly, I focus on eating and just enjoying his company.

Being friends is safe, but there is no way I’ll entertain more than that with an apparently famous hockey player who has women throwing themselves at him.
