Daughter of two ruthless high-Gradient telepaths, Auden Scott is not the child her Psy parents wanted or expected, even before her brain injury. Her thoughts are scattered, her memories fuzzy—or just terrifyingly blank. The only thing she knows for certain is that she must protect her unborn baby . . . a baby she has no recollection of conceiving and who draws an unnerving depth of interest from her dead mother’s closest associates.

Leopard alpha Remi Denier is a man driven by the primal instinct to protect. Protect his pack, protect his allies . . . and protect the mysterious woman who has become a most unlikely neighbor. With eerie eyes that see too much and a scent that alters in ways disturbing and impossible, Auden Scott is the enemy . . . but nothing about this strange Psy is what it seems, and Remi’s feline heart is as fascinated by her as his human half.

Then Auden asks Remi to help her shatter the wall of secrets that is the Scott bloodline. What they unearth will reveal a nightmare beyond imagination. This time, the battle is to the death. . .

Review: Check & Mate by Ali Hazelwood

Happy Valentine's Day!

Love is in the air and on the chessboard in Ali Hazelwood's YA debut, Check & Mate!

It's a great story full of Girl Power and the cute bad boys of the chess world.

About the Book

In this clever and swoonworthy YA debut from the New York Times bestselling author of The Love Hypothesis, life’s moving pieces bring rival chess players together in a match for the heart.

Mallory Greenleaf is done with chess. Every move counts nowadays; after the sport led to the destruction of her family four years earlier, Mallory’s focus is on her mom, her sisters, and the dead-end job that keeps the lights on. That is, until she begrudgingly agrees to play in one last charity tournament and inadvertently wipes the board with notorious “Kingkiller” Nolan Sawyer: current world champion and reigning Bad Boy of chess.

Nolan’s loss to an unknown rook-ie shocks everyone. What’s even more confusing? His desire to cross pawns again. What kind of gambit is Nolan playing? The smart move would be to walk away. Resign. Game over. But Mallory’s victory opens the door to sorely needed cash-prizes and despite everything, she can’t help feeling drawn to the enigmatic strategist….

As she rockets up the ranks, Mallory struggles to keep her family safely separated from the game that wrecked it in the first place. And as her love for the sport she so desperately wanted to hate begins to rekindle, Mallory quickly realizes that the games aren’t only on the board, the spotlight is brighter than she imagined, and the competition can be fierce (-ly attractive. And intelligent…and infuriating…)

My Thoughts

Girl Power!!!

Love, Love, LOVE this book!

Ali Hazelwood writes intelligent, quirky heroines that are always so relatable, so fun, funny, and perfectly imperfect. And she does not disappoint with the lovely Mallory.

Even though Ms. Hazelwood wrote a YA book about chess, I was a little apprehensive to try it. Not just because of the YA genre, but a book about CHESS? Seriously??? Ms. Hazelwood changed my mind, quick, fast and in a hurry with her amazing characters, engaging storyline and fiercely competitive chess arena. I binge read the book in less than 24 hours. Ugh! It was THAT good!

I especially loved watching Mallory–Mal–breaking through the glass ceiling of the chess world. Girl Power, indeed! This story is inspiring and a glowing example of representation, not only in the competitive realm, but in everyday life.

Check & Mate is a wonderful story with brilliantly crafted characters, witty dialogue, intense chemistry, and profound aspects of the human condition.

Highly recommend it!

Excerpt

Prologue

“I am reliably informed that you’re a Gen Z sex symbol.”

I nearly drop my phone.

Okay: I do drop my phone, but I save it before it splashes into a beaker full of ammonia. Then I glance around the chemistry classroom, wondering if anyone else heard.

The other students are either texting or puttering around with their equipment. Mrs. Agarwal is at her desk, pretending to grade papers but probably reading Bill Nye erotic fanfiction. A hopefully-not-lethal smell of ethanoic acid wafts up from my bench, but my AirPods are still in my ears.

No one is paying attention to me or the video on my phone, so I press Play to resume it.

“It was on Time magazine two weeks ago. On the cover. A picture of your face, and then ‘A Gen Z sex symbol.’ How does that feel?”

I am expecting to see Zendaya. Harry Styles. Billie Eilish. The entirety of BTS, crammed on the couch of whatever late-night show the YouTube autoplay algorithm decided to feed me after the pH experiment tutorial ended. But it’s just some dude. A boy, even? He looks out of place in the red velvet chair, with his dark shirt, dark slacks, dark hair, dark expression. Intensely unreadable as he says in a deep, serious voice, “It feels wrong.”

“It does?” the host—Jim or James or Jimmy—asks.

“The Gen Z part is correct,” the guest says. “Not so much the sex symbol.”

The audience eats it up, clapping and hooting, and that’s when I decide to read the caption. Nolan Sawyer, it says. There’s a description explaining who he is, but I don’t need it. I might not recognize the face, but I can’t remember a moment in my life when I didn’t know the name.

Meet the Kingkiller: The No. 1 chess player in the world.

“Let me tell you something, Nolan: smart is the new sexy.”

“Still not sure I qualify.” His tone is so dry, it has me wondering how his publicist talked him into this interview. But the audience laughs, and the host does, too. He leans forward, obviously charmed by this young man who’s built like an athlete, thinks like a theoretical physicist, and has the net worth of a Silicon Valley entrepreneur. An unusual, handsome prodigy who won’t admit to being special.

I wonder if Jim-Jimmy-James has heard what I’ve heard. The gossip. The whispered stories. The dark rumors about the golden boy of chess.

“Let’s just agree that chess is the new sexy. And you’re the one who made it so—there has been a chess renaissance since you started playing. Someone was running commentaries of your games, and they went viral on TikTok—ChessTok, my writers tell me it’s called—and now more people than ever are learning how to play. But first things first: you are a Grandmaster, which is the highest title a chess player can achieve, and just won your second World Champion‑ ship, against”—the host has to look down at his card, because normal Grandmasters are not as famous as Sawyer—“Andreas Antonov. Congratulations.”

Sawyer nods, once.

“And you just turned eighteen. When, again?”

“Three days ago.” Three days ago, I turned sixteen.

Ten years and three days ago, I received my first chess set— plastic pieces, pink and purple—and cried with joy. I’d use it all day long, carry it everywhere with me, then snuggle it in my sleep.

Now I can’t even remember the feel of a pawn in my hand.

“You started playing very young. Did your parents teach you?”

“My grandfather,” Sawyer says. The host looks taken aback, like he didn’t think Sawyer would go there, but recovers quickly.

“When did you realize that you were good enough to be a pro?”

“Am I good enough?”

More audience laughter. I roll my eyes. “Did you know you wanted to be a pro chess player from the start?”

“Yes. I knew all along that there was nothing that I liked as much as winning a chess match.”

The host’s eyebrow lifts. “Nothing?”

Sawyer doesn’t hesitate. “Nothing.”

“And—”

“Mallory?” A hand settles on my shoulder. I jump and tear out one pod. “Did you need any help?”

“Nope!” I smile at Mrs. Agarwal, sliding the phone into my back pocket. “Just finished the instruction video.”

“Oh, perfect. Make sure you put on gloves before you add the acidic solution.”

“I will.”

The rest of the class is almost done with the experiment. I furrow my brow, hurry to catch up, and a few minutes later, when I can’t find my funnel and spill my baking soda, I stop thinking about Sawyer, or about the way his voice sounded when he said that he never wanted anything as much as chess. And I don’t think of him again for a little over two years. That is, until the day we play for the first time.

And I wipe the floor with him.

Keep reading for a look inside Happily Ever Maybe!

But for some reason, I was edgy now.

No, that was a lie. It wasn’t just some reason. I knew exactly what it was.

And it wasn’t Daisy and Kane, my fellow team members today. No, it was the other one.

Her.

I didn’t want to think about her, but I wasn’t sure I could stop. I needed to, however. My job demanded it.

I was a bodyguard and an installer. I not only protected my clients and charges, I also installed security equipment for businesses and homes. While my bosses laid out the security profiles and programs for large corporations and small residences—and also worked with cybersecurity—I did the installs when I wasn’t on bodyguard duty. I enjoyed both aspects of my job and was talented at it.

Yet it didn’t feel like that.

Not with her.

It was always hard to think about anything when it came to Jennifer. My coworker and my nemesis. Not that she knew she was my nemesis. No, that was all on me.

Those blue-gray eyes of hers were piercing and saw everything. At least when it came to the job. She could scent an incoming threat as quickly as I could, and that was saying something. I might be cocky as fuck when it came to my job, but it was for a reason.

And Jennifer was sometimes even better.

Her dark brown hair was pulled into a tight bun away from her face. I liked it when her hair was down, though, since it fell in soft waves past her shoulders. She pulled it back in a ponytail or a braid when she was working out, but when she was on duty, like today, it was in a bun, so nobody could use it against her in a fight.

I always kept my hair decently short, but my beard was getting longer. I’d probably have to trim it soon. I wasn’t trying to blend in like I had with my old job when everybody had long beards, and I was undercover. Now, I needed to trim it a bit so nobody could pull it in a fight.

But Jennifer? She’d thought about all of that already. Hence the bun.

She was slim with a narrow waist and average height—though not much about her was average. But that delicate frame was all muscle. She could bench press more than a few of the guys on the team and kick any of our asses on any given day. Hell, she’d pinned me to the ground once, and I nearly swallowed my tongue. And then I’d had to hide my erection from her. Like I did most days. Because Jennifer was a distraction.

My distraction.

Review: Frostbitten by Rebecca Zanetti

Frostbitten is Book #6 in Rebecca Zanetti's Deep Ops series.
Each book is full of suspense, intrigue, strong women, sexy alpha males, and a crazy fun German Shepherd that defies the laws of physics.
Frostbitten can easily be read as a standalone but if you get the chance, I highly recommend the entire series!

About the Book

Enigmatic. With a wildly gifted mind, and an untamed head of hair to match, petite powerhouse Millicent Frost is brilliant when it comes to gadgets and electronics—less so with people. After an attempt to bust a bank scam goes awry, Millie is in hot water with Homeland Security and targeted by lethal enemies. In the midst of the trouble, she heads home to help out with the family hunting and fishing business. But when their rival competitor and Millie’s ex is murdered, she’s the number one suspect . . .

Irresistible. Former Marine turned lawyer Scott Terentson devotes himself to getting his clients out of tricky binds. A loner, the last thing he wants is to belong to any team, yet the Deep Ops group considers him one of their own—and he pays the price by getting shot at by their enemies. Now Millie is seeking his help—just as he’s dealing with a brutal fail regarding a recent trial. Both are a headache, yet he’s drawn to Millie in spite of himself. They’re opposites, but maybe the old adage is true . . .

Electric. Working together, Millie and Scott soon have more on their hands than they bargained for as the danger escalates—along with the sizzling heat between them. And when a disappearance is thrown into the mix, all bets are off . . .

My Thoughts

Frostbitten is a high octane, fast-paced romantic suspense full of…
 –danger
–intrigue
–sexy chemistry
–whodunit(s)
–loveable German Shepherd with a high heel shoe fetish and a drinking problem
–reliable teammates
–secrets
–family
–more secrets
And so much more!

This has got to be my favorite book in the series. Scott and Millie make a great team. I love how independent they are but also how well they work together. Millie has been on the outskirts of the series for a while now and I am so glad she finally gets to shine.

I just loved the story and I can’t wait for the next book!

Reviews: Lover's Instinct & Primal Possession by Katie Reus

Today, I'm sharing a mini review for Lover's Instinct (Moon Shifter #1.5) and full review of Primal Possession (Moon Shifter #2).

The series was previously published by Berkley Romance in 2012 and now Ms. Reus has the rights back and revamped the stories with gorgeous covers!

Lover's Instinct is a fast and furious novella that takes no time at all to read and will satisfy your craving for paranormal romance... or fan the flames for more!

Primal Possession is a full-length novel and focuses on Liam Armstrong, Connor's brother. It's a full service read with danger, intrigue, suspense and surprises.

About the Book

This alpha shifter is ready to stake his claim…

Lupine shifter Nikan Lawless has it bad for Esperanze Cordona, the sweet and curvy female who only views him as a friend. Lately, however, he’s started to see sparks of interest. So when he’s assigned to act as her bodyguard during a weekend education conference, he knows it's the perfect opportunity to seduce her out of the friend zone—away from the prying eyes of their pack.

To put his plan into motion, Nikan cancels one of their hotel rooms. Is it underhanded? Yes. But he’s playing for keeps with this female. When a dangerous man from Esperanze's past shows up in need of help, Nikan must shield her from a group of rogue shifters and convince her that they're destined to be mates. Since she’s a beta and he’s an alpha she’s afraid things will never work between them. But he knows they’re meant to be together and he’ll do what it takes to make her his forever.

My Thoughts

I really enjoyed the novella. The story is fast-paced and the chemistry between Nikan and Esperanto is explosive! I just wished it were longer! I'm looking forward to learning more about the new packmates. Highly recommend this paranormal romance series.

About the Book

He’s found his mate…

As his pack’s second-in-command, Liam Armstrong is used to giving orders and his packmates falling in line. Then he meets a feisty human who has no problem telling him no. And oh yeah, she’s also his mate.

But she’s human.

Bookshop owner December is no stranger to loss—her younger brother was murdered by a shifter years ago. After resettling in the quiet mountain town of Fontana she’s finally made a life for herself, including befriending local shifters. But now she’s been targeted by a human hate group, forcing her to turn to the gorgeous, bossy wolf who’s convinced they’re mates. She thinks the very thought is ridiculous, but if she wants to survive, she’ll have to find a way to trust him. Before it’s too late for both of them.

SECOND EDITION - This updated and revised edition is the author’s preferred text.

My Thoughts

Primal Possession is Book 2 in the Moon Shifter series and is just as exciting as the first book!

Liam Armstrong is the brother of Connor Armstrong, Alpha of the Armstrong-Cordona pack. In Alpha Instinct, Liam meets his mate, December. She’s a beautiful and curvy red-head that owns the local bookstore and sister to Parker, the local sheriff… and 100% human. There are so many red flags here. This whole thing is a disaster waiting to happen. However…  never underestimate the power of a stubborn shifter who’s scented its mate.

December is definitely skittish after she finds out the hunky Scotsman patronizing her bookstore is a shifter, and a wolf at that. But there’s something about him that calls to her. When December falls victim to some wack job hate group, Liam’s protective instincts kick into overdrive. There’s no way December can escape Liam’s presence or his devastating brown eyes with danger lurking at her doorstep. Will Liam wear December down and get her to accept his claim or will she hit the road for good, breaking her heart (and his) in the process?

I really enjoyed the story. I think Liam and December paired well together. I love that she doesn’t let Liam railroad her with his possessiveness. She’s a strong alpha in her own right and the perfect match for Liam.

I also enjoyed the secondary storylines where we get some backstory of some of the packmates and townsfolk. They are equally as exciting!

I can’t wait to read more from the Moon Shifter universe!

Review: Alpha Instinct by Katie Reus

Alpha Instinct is the first book in Katie Reus's Moon Shifter series!
The series was previously published by Berkley Romance in 2012.
Ms. Reus got the rights back so she revamped the stories and gave them a makeover with gorgeous covers!

The Moon Shifter series is a paranormal romance series with mystery/suspense elements. The books are exciting, engaging and delicious to read!

About the Book

He ghosted her years ago…

Ana Cordona has been a strong leader for the lupine shifters who survived after half her pack was murdered. As tough as she is, her pack is vulnerable to a devious neighbor who wants their land—and Ana as his own. So when a ghost from her past barrels back into her life promising protection, it’s almost enough to make Ana forget how he walked out on her before—and reluctantly accept his offer to mate.

Now he’s back.

Connor isn’t walking away again. Ana has always been his mate, something his wolf accepted long ago. And the only reason he left before was for her own protection. Whatever it takes, he’s determined not to leave her side again—but danger is all around them in the form of a rival pack and a radicalized human element in town who wants to destroy all shifters. If they want a chance at a future—and to survive the deadly threats closing in—they’re going to have to learn to trust each other. Unfortunately, the danger is closer than they ever imagined.

Author’s Note: Alpha Instinct was originally published by Berkley in 2012 and the rights have recently reverted back to me. Since then, I’ve done some light editing and rewriting. So if the cover looks new but the title feels familiar, that’s why! I wanted to make sure that those who have read this, didn’t accidentally purchase this again. But for new readers, I hope you enjoy.

SECOND EDITION - This updated and revised edition is the author’s preferred text.

My Thoughts

A Dangerously Good Read!

I really enjoyed reading Alpha Instinct. This book is not just about the second chance romance between Ana and Connor, it’s so much more!

In the Moon Shifter series, the secret’s out that shifters and vampires exist. It’s been a grueling process for the otherworldly creatures and humans to find an equilibrium in which to live peacefully. Discrimination against shifters and vampires is rampant, and the hate groups are vicious in their persecution and extermination of them. What people don’t realize is all the shifters/vampires want is to live in peace, raise their families and live happy lives. A few bad apples give otherworldies a bad name. But not all shifters are bad, just like not all humans are good. Sound familiar?

Okay, back to the story: Ana’s pack is left vulnerable because a sickness has spread through her pack months before killing all the males, pregnant females, including Ana’s dad–the alpha–her mom, and other pack members, leaving Ana the default alpha. Poor girl has to pull herself back together to protect the ones that remain and figure out who poisoned her pack. A grueling task, but she’s the alpha’s daughter, her strength and fierce protectiveness is admiral, and much needed.

As the story begins, Ana finds herself in a deadly situation when she hears a voice she hasn’t heard in a long time: Connor Armstrong, her first love and the man who walked out on her without a word. Connor and his brother Liam are back in town with a pack of warrior wolf shifters. Connor has an offer for Ana: Mate me and you’ll have my pack and my protection. Pretty romantic, right? Chaos definitely ensues.

The story is engaging, entertaining, and deadly. Ana and Connor have good chemistry and I love how strong she is and how she stands up to Connor and his pig-headed, overprotective alphaness. I love that there’s a lot of characters with diverse personalities. I really enjoyed reading about the political climate of the story and the diverse judicial systems humans and shifters/vamps/otherworldies have.

I am a sucker for a paranormal romance and to throw in a second chance romance on top of it while sprinkling in some mystery and suspense? Yes, please!

I can’t wait to start the next book!

Highly recommend it!

Review: The Long and Winding Road by Marie Force

I am so crushed that this is the last book but Marie Force does give us a piece of her heart as she says goodbye to this wonderful series.
If you love small town contemporary romances with big, boisterous families, you'll definitely love the Green Mountain and Butler, Vermont series.

About the Book

This is the one you’ve been waiting for…

Max Abbott takes center stage in the Butler, Vermont Series finale when the timeline jumps forward five years and finds Max staring down his ten-year high school reunion, with no desire whatsoever to attend. Under pressure from his family to go, he ends up glad to be there when he connects with the only person from high school he wanted to see—his ex-girlfriend, Lexi, who’s been “missing” the last ten years.

When Max finds out where Lexi has been—and why—and realizes all the old familiar feelings are still there, he’ll have to decide if he can risk taking a chance on an uncertain situation with her or if he’d rather continue to be alone with his son, Caden.

Find out where all the Abbotts and Colemans are and what Fred and Dexter are up to five years later as this beloved series comes to an exciting and heartfelt conclusion.

My Thoughts

I have loved this series since its inception as the Green Mountain series through Berkley Romance many years ago. What first drew me to the series was that the book titles are Beatles’ songs and I am a HUGE Beatles fan. Another reason why I gave this series a try is because I was genuinely curious about a series with 10 siblings in a small Vermont town finding and falling in love with their people. I am also a big small-town romance gal because I grew up in one. I actually started the second book in the series first, and was completely HOOKED!

Each and every story is beautifully and lovingly crafted with wit, heart and hilarity. I was a little crushed when the publisher stopped the Green Mountain series at six books (since there are 10 siblings) but was thrilled when Ms. Force decided to continue the stories through the indie publishing route and renaming the series after the fictional town name, Butler, VT. Each book, each couple, and each and every amazing character has helped me weather this thing called life on so many occasions. I always feel like I’m coming home with every page turn, every laugh, every cry, and every HEA.

So, of course, finding out that this is the last book in the series, my heart is broken. I’m adrift and alone. Dramatic much? Absolutely. A little selfish? Probably. I understand why Ms. Force did it, but are we really reasonable when an author we love ends the beautiful world we’ve invested ourselves, our feelings, and our hopes and dreams in? It's like each and every character is a member of our own family. Okay, okay, enough with the sappy stuff. Let’s get on with the review…

The Long and Winding Road gets a good and proper sendoff to the series, the characters and is a beautiful love letter to all the readers who are deeply devoted to and champions of the books. Our last main man is Max, the baby of the Abbott family. He’s got a second chance at first love and it’s a beautifully fragile–and exhilarating–experience. I love Max and Lexi’s story and their determination to make this second chance work. Max is a single dad so there are some hiccups along the way with acclimating Lexi into their family, and a few surprise obstacles that could make or break the couple. No one ever said love was easy, but it’s so easy to love and hope for a better, brighter future for this cute little family.

I am so sad as I write this but I am so happy and so privileged to read and love this series that continues to stick with me year after year. Thank you, Marie Force, for the laughs, the love, and for sharing your stories with us.

Blog Tour & Review: Bride by Ali Hazelwood

Happy Release Day Ali Hazelwood!

Ali Hazelwood has created an amazing paranormal romance world that is brilliantly crafted and absolutely stunning!

Don't wait, grab your copy TODAY!

About the Book

A dangerous alliance between a Vampyre bride and an Alpha Werewolf becomes a love deep enough to sink your teeth into in this new paranormal romance from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Love, Theoretically and The Love Hypothesis.

Misery Lark, the only daughter of the most powerful Vampyre councilman of the Southwest, is an outcast—again. Her days of living in anonymity among the Humans are over: she has been called upon to uphold a historic peacekeeping alliance between the Vampyres and their mortal enemies, the Weres, and she sees little choice but to surrender herself in the exchange—again...

Weres are ruthless and unpredictable, and their Alpha, Lowe Moreland, is no exception. He rules his pack with absolute authority, but not without justice. And, unlike the Vampyre Council, not without feeling. It’s clear from the way he tracks Misery’s every movement that he doesn’t trust her. If only he knew how right he was….

Because Misery has her own reasons to agree to this marriage of convenience, reasons that have nothing to do with politics or alliances, and everything to do with the only thing she's ever cared about. And she is willing to do whatever it takes to get back what’s hers, even if it means a life alone in Were territory…alone with the wolf.

Excerpt

Chapter 1

It's been storming for three days straight when he finally returns from a meeting with the leader of the Big Bend huddle. Two of his seconds are already inside his home, waiting for him with wary expressions.

"The Vampyre woman-she backed out."

He grunts as he wipes his face. Smart of her, he thinks.

"But they found a replacement," Cal adds, sliding a manila folder on the counter. "Everything's in here. They want to know if she has your approval."

"We proceed as planned."

Cal huffs out a laugh. Flor frowns. "Don't you want to look at the-"

"No. This changes nothing."

They're all the same, anyway.

Six weeks before the ceremony

She shows up at the start-up where I work on an early Thursday evening, when the sun has already set and the entire bullpen is contemplating grievous bodily harm.

Against me.

I doubt I deserve this level of hatred, but I do understand it. And that's why I don't make a fuss when I return to my desk following a brief meeting with my manager and notice the state of my stapler. Honestly, it's fine. I work from home 90 percent of the time and rarely print anything. Who cares if someone smeared bird shit on it?

"Don't take it personally, Missy." Pierce leans against our cubicle divider. His smile is less concerned friend, more smarmy used car salesman; even his blood smells oily.

"I won't." Other people's approval is a powerful drug. Lucky me, I never got the chance to develop an addiction. If there's something I'm good at, it's rationalizing my peers' contempt toward me. I've been training like piano prodigies: tirelessly and since early childhood.

"No need to sweat it."

"I'm not." Literally. I barely own the necessary glands.

"And don't listen to Walker. He didn't say what you think he did."

Pretty sure it was "nasty bitch" and not "tasty peach" that he yelled across the conference room, but who knows?

"It comes with the territory. You'd be mad, too, if someone did a penetration test against a firewall you've been working on for weeks and breached it in what, one hour?"

It was maybe a third of that, even counting the break I took in the middle after realizing how quickly I was blowing through the system. I spent it online shopping for a new hamper, since Serena's damn cat seems to be asleep in my old one whenever I need to do laundry. I texted her a picture of the receipt, followed by You and your cat owe me sixteen dollars. Then I sat and waited for a reply, like I always do.

It didn't come. Nor had I expected it would.

"People will get over it," he Pierces on. "And hey, you never bring lunch, so no need to worry someone'll spit in your Tupperware." He bursts into laughter. I turn to my computer monitor, hoping he'll peace out. Boy, am I wrong. "And to be honest, it's kind of on you. If you tried to mingle more . . . Personally, I get your loner, mysterious, quiet vibe. But some read you as aloof, like you think you're better than us. If you made an effort to-"

"Misery."

When I hear my name called-the real one-for a split, exceptionally dumb second, I experience relief that this conversation is going to be over. Then I crane my neck and notice the woman standing on the other side of the divider. Her face is distantly familiar, and so is the black hair, but it's not until I focus on her heartbeat that I manage to place her. It's slow like only a Vampyre's can be, and . . .

Well.

Shit.

"Vania?"

"You're hard to find," she tells me, voice melodic and low. I briefly contemplate slamming my head against the keyboard. Then settle for replying calmly:

"That's by design."

"I figured."

I massage my temple. What a day. What a fucking day. "And yet, here you are."

"And yet, here I am."

"Why, hello." Pierce's smile gets a notch slimier as he turns to leer at Vania. His eyes start at her high heels, travel up the straight lines of her dark pantsuit, stop on her full breasts. I don't read minds, but he's thinking MILF so hard, I can practically hear it. "Are you a friend of Missy's?"

"You could say that, yes. Since she was a child."

"Oh my God. Do tell, how was baby Missy?"

The corner of Vania's lips twitches. "She was . . . odd, and difficult. If often useful."

"Wait-are you two related?"

"No. I'm her father's Right Hand, Head of his Guard," she says, looking at me. "And she has been summoned."

I straighten in my chair. "Where?"

"The Nest."

This is not rare-it's unprecedented. Excluding sporadic phone calls and even more sporadic meetings with Owen, I haven't spoken with another Vampyre in years. Because no one has reached out.

I should tell Vania to fuck off. I'm no longer a child stuck on a fool's errand: going back to my father with any expectations that he and the rest of my people won't be total assholes is an exercise in futility, and I'm well aware of it. But apparently this half-assed overture is making me forget, because I hear myself asking, "Why?"

"You'll have to come and find out." Vania's smile doesn't reach her eyes. I squint, like the answer is tattooed on her face. Meanwhile, Pierce reminds us of his unfortunate existence.

"Ladies. Right hand? Summon?" He laughs, loud and grating. I still want to flick his forehead and make him hurt, but I'm starting to feel a frisson of worry for this fool. "Are you guys into LARPing or . . ."

He finally shuts up. Because when Vania turns to him, no trick of the light could hide the purple hue of her eyes. Nor her long, perfectly white fangs, gleaming under the electric lights.

"Y-you . . ." Pierce looks between us for several seconds, muttering something incoherent.

And that's when Vania decides to ruin my life and snap her teeth at him.

I sigh, pinching the bridge of my nose.

Pierce spins on his heels and sprints past my cubicle, running over a potted benjamin fig. "Vampyre! Vampyre-there's a- A Vampyre is attacking us, someone call the Bureau, someone call the-"

Vania takes out a laminated card with the Human-Vampyre Relations Bureau logo, one that grants her diplomatic immunity in Human territory. But there's no one to look at it: the bullpen has erupted into a small panic, and most of my coworkers are screaming, already halfway down the emergency stairs. People trample each other to get to the nearest exit. I see Walker dart out of the bathroom, a strip of toilet paper dangling from his khakis, and feel my shoulders slump.

"I liked this job," I tell Vania, grabbing the framed Polaroid of me and Serena and resignedly stuffing it into my bag. "It was easy. They bought my circadian rhythm disorder excuse and let me come in at night."

"My apologies," she says. Unapologetic. "Come with me."

I should tell her to fuck off, and I will. In the meantime, I give in to my curiosity and follow her, straightening the poor benjamin fig on my way out.

The Nest is still the tallest building in the north of The City, and perhaps the most distinctive: a bloodred podium that stretches underground for hundreds of feet, topped by a mirror skyscraper that comes alive around sunset and slides back to sleep in the early hours of the morning.

I brought Serena here once, when she asked to see what the heart of the Vampyre territory was like, and she stared open-mouthed, jarred by the sleek lines and ultramodern design. She'd been expecting candelabras, and heavy velvet drapes to block the murderous sun, and the corpses of our enemies hanging from the ceiling, blood milked from their veins to the very last drop. Bat artwork, in honor of our winged, chiropterous forefathers. Coffins, just because.

"It's nice. I just thought it'd be more . . . metal?" she mused, not at all intimidated at the idea of being the only Human in an elevator full of Vampyres. The memory still makes me smile years later.

Flexible spaces, automated systems, integrated tools-that's what the Nest is. Not just the crown jewel of our territory, but also the center of our community. A place for shops and offices and errands, where anything one of us could need, from nonurgent healthcare to a zoning permit to five liters of AB positive, can be easily obtained. And then, in the uppermost floors, the builders made room for some private quarters, some of which have been purchased by the most influential families in our society.

Mostly my family.

"Follow me," Vania says when the doors swish open, and I do, flanked by two uniformed council guards who are most definitely not here to protect me. A bit offensive, that I'm being treated like an intruder in the place where I was born, especially as we walk parallel to a wall that's plastered with portraits of my ancestors. They morph over the centuries, from oils to acrylics to photographs, gray to Kodachrome to digital. What stays the same are the expressions: distant, arrogant, and frankly, unhappy. Not a healthy thing, power.

The only Lark I recognize from personal experience is the one closest to Father's office. My grandfather was already old and a little demented by the time Owen and I were born, and my most vivid memory of him is from that one time I woke up in the middle of the night to find him in my bedroom, pointing at me with trembling hands and yelling in the Tongue, something about me being destined for a grisly death.

In fairness, he wasn't wrong.

"In here," Vania says with a soft knock to the door. "The councilman is waiting for you."

I scan her face. Vampyres are not immortal; we grow old the same as every other species, but . . . damn. She looks like she hasn't aged a day since she escorted me to the Collateral exchange ceremony. Seventeen years ago.

"Is there something you need?"

"No." I turn and reach for the doorknob. Hesitate. "Is he sick?"

Vania seems amused. "You think he'd call you here for that?"

I shrug. I can't think of a single other reason he'd want to see me.

"For what? To commiserate? Or find solace in your filial affection? You have been among the Humans far too long."

"I was thinking more along the lines of him needing a kidney."

"We are Vampyres, Misery. We act for the good of the most, or not at all."

She's gone before I can roll my eyes, or serve her that "fuck off" I've been meaning to. I sigh, glance at the stone-faced guards she left behind, and then walk into my father's office.

The first things I notice are the two walls of windows, which is exactly what Father wants. Every Human I've talked with assumes that Vampyres hate light and relish darkness, but they couldn't be more wrong. The sun may be forbidden to us, toxic always and deathly in large quantities, but that's precisely why we covet it with such intensity. Windows are a luxury, because they need to be treated with absurdly expensive materials that filter everything that might harm us. And windows this large are the most bombastic of status symbols, in a full display of dynastic power and obscene wealth. And beyond them . . .

The river that slices The City into North and South-us, and them. Only a few hundred feet separate the Nest from Were territory, but the riverbank is littered with outlook towers, checkpoints, and guard posts, heavily monitored twenty-four seven. A single bridge exists, but access to it is closely surveilled in both directions, and as far as I know, no vehicle has traveled across it since well before I was born. Past that, there are a few Were security areas, and the deep green of an oak forest that stretches south for miles.

I always thought it smart of them not to build civilian settlements next to one of the most sanguinary borders in the Southwest. When Owen and I were children, before I was sent away, Father walked in on us wondering why the Vampyre headquarters had been placed so close to our most lethal enemies. "To remember," he explained. "And to remind."

I don't know. Twenty years later, it still seems pretty fucked up to me.

"Misery." Father finishes tapping at the touch screen monitor and stands from his luxury mahogany desk, unsmiling but not cold. "It's good to see you here again."

"It sure is something." The past few years have been kind to Henry Lark. I examine his tall frame, triangular face, and wide-set eyes, and I'm reminded of how much I take after him. His blond hair is a little grayer, but still perfectly slicked back. I've never seen it anything but-never seen Father less than impeccably put together. Tonight the sleeves of his white button-down may be rolled back, but meticulously so. If they're meant to trick me into thinking that this is a casual meeting, they've failed.

And that's why, when he points at the leather chair in front of his desk and says, "Sit," I decide to lean back against the door.

"Vania says you're not dying." I'm aiming for rude. Unfortunately, I think I just sound curious.

"I trust that you're healthy, too." He smiles faintly. "How have the last seven years treated you?"

There is a beautiful vintage clock behind his head. I watch it tick eight seconds before saying, "Just peachy."

"Yes?" He gives me a once-over. "You'd better remove them, Misery. Someone might mistake you for a Human."

He's referring to my brown contacts. Which I considered taking out in the car, before deciding not to bother. The problem is, there are many other signs that I've been living among the Humans, most not so quickly reversible. The fangs I shave to dull points every week, for instance, are unlikely to escape his notice. "I was at work."

"Ah, yes. Vania mentioned you have a job. Something with computers, knowing you?"

"Something like that."

He nods. "And how is your little friend? Once again safe and sound, I trust."

I stiffen. "How do you know she-"

"Oh, Misery. You didn't really think that your communications with Owen went unmonitored, did you?"

I clench my fists behind my back and seriously debate slamming the door behind me and returning home. But there must be a reason he brought me here, and I need to know it. So I take my phone out of my pocket, and once I'm sitting across from Father, I lay it face up on his desk.

My Review

Wow! Ali Hazelwood can write anything!

Ms. Hazelwood has written several STEMinist romances, a brilliant YA novel, and now she’s dipping her toe into the paranormal romance pool. And I am totally here for it! She absolutely slays it!

Bride opens up a new world where Vampyres and Weres (wolf shifters) exist alongside humans. There’s currently an alliance between the Vampyres and humans and a shaky cease-fire between the Vampyres and Weres–with a long history of bad blood, literally and figuratively.

To stay at the top of the food chain, Vampyres and Weres decide to create an alliance by marrying a Vampyre–Misery, to a Were–Lowe, Alpha of the Weres. I mean, what could possibly go wrong? Turns out, a lot actually!

The prologue captured my attention and the story held me in thrall until the very end! The characters are diversely and brilliantly crafted. The dialogue is witty, the storyline is engaging, and the chemistry between Lowe and Misery is fierce in its intensity. Nothing gets the blood pumping like a good enemies-to-lovers story.

If it wasn’t Misery’s funny inner (and outer) monologue or Lowe’s heavy alpha workload keeping me entertained, it was the political climate of this exciting new world that had me hungry for more. I was completely engrossed in the politics and subtle (and not so subtle) nuances between the races that were dangerous, deadly, and ever-changing.

And can we talk about Misery? She is a fun character that’s personable, loyal, easily relatable, and funny as hell. I absolutely love her!

I LOVE this book!!! I am PRAYING Ms. Hazelwood is developing more stories in this universe. An absolute MUST READ for any paranormal romance lover, or any book lover in general!

I’m running out of words to describe how awesome Bride is so just go git yourself a copy, today!

About the Book

The legacy continues...

Eva Tennant, like everyone at The Aegis, hates demons. But she loves her job as Deputy Spokesperson for the global demon-slaying organization, and she’s excited to be in the running for Chief Spokesperson. All she has to do is not screw up the two-week exchange program with The Aegis’s rival agency, the Demon Activity Response Team. But things go horribly wrong when a murder turns her into a fugitive from justice and puts a demonic target on her back.

Logan, son of the Horseman of the Apocalypse known as Death, has dedicated his life to fighting demons alongside his colleagues at DART. He loves fighting, females, and his pet hellhound, Cujo. What he doesn’t love is The Aegis, whose leadership attempted to slaughter him at birth. Understandably, he balks when he’s ordered to protect an Aegis Guardian responsible for the deaths of his friends. Really, he’d rather feed her to Cujo.

But when an old enemy rises from the ashes, Eva and Logan find themselves giving into temptation even as they sacrifice the things…and people…they love the most.

Excerpt

Eva wasn’t sure what she’d expected the inside of DART’s main office building to look like, but a modern, brightly lit headquarters with a jungle-themed fountain in the lobby wasn’t it. Although the demon and angel statues eyeing each other with suspicion in the center of the spray weren’t all that unexpected.

Keeley had thrown a coin into the crystal pool out of some sort of superstition as they walked toward the auditorium where they now sat, waiting impatiently for someone to show up and give them the scheduled orientation.

“Of course, they’re late,” Carlos growled. “Go figure that a bunch of Aegis traitors can’t be trusted to handle shit efficiently.”

“Idiots,” Sig said, kicking the stage in front of him, leaving a dusty boot print.

Eva wasn’t so sure they were idiots, but this was definitely not a professional start to the cooperative mission.

The door near the back of the stage whispered open, and everyone went silent as a figure emerged from the shadows.

“Holy shit.” Keeley sounded a little breathless as she jabbed Eva in the ribs. “No way that guy is a demon. Angel for sure.”

Keeley wasn’t serious…probably…but Eva understood where she’d gotten the angel thing. The man who’d just entered the chamber was stunning. Really stunning. His wavy blond hair gleamed like a halo under the harsh stage lights, and ropy, thick muscles in his forearms flexed under tan skin as he strode across the stage. The strike of his combat boots echoed through the chamber, making her heart pound with every step.

His black DART T-shirt was tucked into midnight tactical pants that cut a shadowy figure against the dark curtain behind him.

He gave them all a bored glance as he walked toward the mic. Seriously, he was going to use the mic to talk to a whopping six people?

She felt a little foolish when he strolled past the mic and plopped down on the edge of the stage, his long legs dangling over the side.

“My name is Logan,” he said in a deep, rumbling voice that made heat curl in her belly.

“Apparently, I drew the short stick, and now I have to give you the DART 101 lecture. You probably don’t want to be here any more than I do, so here are the basics. DART stands for Demonic Activity Response Team. We formed thirty-five years ago when we broke off from The Aegis because, I dunno, let’s go with philosophical differences. Now, we’re doing this prisoner exchange thing, where people from DART hang out at Aegis headquarters, and you guys hang out here—”

My Review

Readers, hold onto your hats, keep your hands and legs inside the book at all times and fasten your seatbelts. Things are about to get crazy! Holy goddess this is a wild ride!

The Demonica series has always been a favorite of mine. I love this “no rules” world of demons, debauchery, and deviousness. Where the battle between Good vs Evil is not always a straight line. Where choices have consequences deadlier than you can imagine. And where love blooms in the most unusual of places.

Which is why I am SO excited to read about the second generation of Demonica Kids! The series begins three decades after the events that happened in Reaper (Demonica #19). So, you absolutely can reread Reaper before tackling Legacy of Temptation, but it’s not absolutely necessary. There may, however, be some spoiler-y things if you don’t, but when I discovered them, I just thought they were fun surprises that just added to the magic of the story.

In Legacy of Temptation, the world is definitely a different place and a lot of things have happened. Some good, some bad and some really, really, REALLY bad. So bad, in fact, that the Aegis (a mostly human demon-hating organization) embarks on an exchange program with the Demon Activity Response Team (Demons/Angels/Otherworldlies fighting against baddie demons and otherworldlies) to help each other learn techniques to help take down scary bad demons. It’s more of a PR stunt than anything. Don’t want to alarm the humans on how dangerous the threats to the world really are. Things are literally going to hell in a handbasket, and that’s on a good day. Unfortunately, it’s about to get a whole lot worse.

No one gets out unscathed.

Oh my GOODNESS! I read this book in less than 24 hours. It’s unputdownable! Brilliant world building. Diverse characters. So many WTF moments!

If you thought Larissa Ione was pulling her punches in previous books, she sure the hell isn’t now!

An absolutely exciting, amazing, funny, unpredictable, explosive, grief-inducing, crazy wild story full of action, danger and so much more! I HIGHLY recommend Legacy of Temptation and the entire Demonica series!
