Day 5: The Christmas Cowboy Hero by Donna Grant

Happy December!

Today is Day 5 of my holiday reading recommendations.

I'm sharing my review of The Christmas Cowboy Hero!

This is the first book in Donna Grant's Heart of Texas series and it's sooo good!

Small towns and cowboys are just the beginning of this endearing read.

About the Book

New York Times bestselling author Donna Grant returns to Texas, where a small-town legend just might find the greatest gift of all in The Christmas Cowboy Hero...

’Tis the season for ex-Navy SEAL Clayton East to come home for the holidays—even if the mood at home is anything but festive. His father is ill. The East Ranch is in financial trouble. And now it’s on Clayton, the prodigal son, to make sure his family doesn’t lose everything.

Headstrong Abby Harper is like a mother to her younger brothers, who she’s helped raise since she was a teenager. Keeping them in line is no small task while she’s also working toward her college degree. And now that one of her brothers has been arrested for stealing cattle at the East Ranch, Abby is at her wits’ end. But there is a silver lining: Clayton East. He believes in second chances, and is willing to give one to her brother this Christmas. Letting beautiful Abby—and the inescapable longing in his heart—off the hook, however, is a whole ’nother story. Could it be that the woman of this local hero’s dreams has been back at home all along?

Clearview, Texas

Three weeks before Christmas

This shit couldn’t be happening. Abby Harper’s heart thumped against her ribs as she turned into the parking lot of the sheriff’s department. She parked and opened her car door, only to have her keys drop from her shaking hands. It took her three tries to pick them up because she couldn’t get her fingers to listen to what her brain was telling them.

Along with the fact that her brother had been arrested, her mind couldn’t stop thinking about the money she was losing for leaving her job early to find out what happened. Which meant that there was a real possibility that she would have to choose between paying for electricity or groceries next week.

She hunkered into her coat, bracing against a blast of cold air as she hurried to the door of the building. As soon as she was inside, the heat engulfed her.

Coming through the speakers overhead was the old Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings song Momma, Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to be Cowboys.

The irony wasn’t lost on her. The problem was, she’d done everything she could. But Clearview was in cattle country. That meant there were cowboys everywhere—as well as rodeos that happened too frequently to even count.

Abby licked her lips and walked up to the counter and the glass window. A man in a uniform slid back the pane and raised his blond brows in question. His look told her he didn’t care what had brought her there or what sad story she might have.

“Hi,” she said, her voice squeaking. Abby cleared her throat and tried again. “Hi. I’m here about Brice Harper.”

“You don’t look old enough to be his mother,” the man stated as he reached for a file.

After all these years, Abby should’ve been used to such a response. But she didn’t think a person ever got used to such things.

She forced a half smile. “I’m his sister, but also his legal guardian.”

“And your parents?”

If it had been anyone but a sheriff’s deputy, Abby would’ve told them it was none of their business.

“Dad died years ago, and our mother ran off. But not before she gave me legal guardianship of my brothers.”

The man’s dark eyes widened. “You have another brother?”

“Yes.”

As if she needed another reminder that she was failing at raising her siblings.

“Through that door,” the deputy said as he pointed to his left.

A loud beep sounded, and Abby dashed to open the door. She walked through it to find another police officer waiting for her. Despite Brice’s reckless nature and the rowdy crowd he hung with, this was her first time at a police station.

And, quite frankly, she prayed it was her last.

Nothing could prepare anyone for what awaited them once they entered. The plain white walls, thick doors, locks, and cameras everywhere made her feel as if the building were closing in on her. And that didn’t even take into account all the deputies watching her as she walked past.

She wasn’t sure if being taken back to see Brice was a good thing or not. Wasn’t there supposed to be something about bail? Not that she could pay it.

Her thoughts came to a halt when the deputy stopped by a door and opened it as he stepped aside. Abby glanced inside the room before she looked at him. He jerked his chin toward the door.

She hesitantly stepped to the entrance. Her gaze landed on a familiar figure, and relief swamped her. “Danny.”

“Hi, Abby,” he said as he rose from his seat at the table in the middle of the room.

His kind, hazel eyes crinkled at the corners with his smile. He walked to her then and guided her to the table. All her apprehension vanished. Not even the fact that he also wore a sheriff’s deputy uniform bothered her. Because she’d known Danny Oldman since they were in grade school.

He’d run with the popular crowd at school because he’d been one of the stars of the football team, but Danny never forgot that he’d grown up in the wrong part of town—next door to her.

“I’m so glad you’re here,” she said.

His smile slipped a little. “What Brice did is serious, Abby.”

She pulled out the chair, the metal scraping on the floor like a screech, and sat. “No one has told me anything. Brice refused to speak of it. He just told me to come.”

“Perhaps you should be more firm with him.”

The deep voice sent a shiver through her. She hadn’t realized anyone else was in the room. Abby looked over her shoulder to see a tall, lean man push away from the corner and walk toward her.

His black Stetson was pulled low over his face, but she got a glimpse of a clean-shaven jaw, square chin, and wide, thin lips. It wasn’t until he stopped across the table from her and flattened his hands on the surface that she remembered to breathe.

“Abby,” Danny said. “This is Clayton East. Clayton, Abby Harper.”

It was a good thing she was already sitting because Abby was sure her legs wouldn’t have held her. Everyone knew the Easts. Their ranch was the largest in the county. The family was known to be generous and welcoming, but that wasn’t the vibe she got from Clayton at the moment.

Then it hit her. Whatever Brice had done involved the East Ranch. Of all the people for her brother to piss off, it had to be them. There was no way she could compete with their wealth or influence. In other words, her family was screwed ten ways from Sunday.

Clayton lifted his head, pushing his hat back with a finger. She glimpsed strands of blond hair beneath the hat. Her gaze clashed with pale green eyes that impaled her with a steely look. No matter what she did, she couldn’t look away. She’d never seen so much bottled anger or anguish in someone’s stare before.

It stunned her. And she suspected it had nothing to do with her brother or the ranch but something else entirely. She wondered what it could be.

“No,” she said.

What should’ve been internal dialogue came out. Clayton’s blond brows snapped together in confusion. She glanced at Danny, hoping that her outburst would be ignored. It wasn’t as if Clayton needed to know that her history with men was . . . well, it was best left forgotten.

When she looked back at Clayton, she was arrested by his rugged features. He wasn’t just handsome. He was gorgeous. Skin tanned a deep brown from the sun only highlighted his eyes more. His angular features shouldn’t be appealing, but they were oh, so attractive.

She decided to look away from his face to gather herself but realized that was a mistake when her gaze dropped to the denim shirt that hugged his wide, thick shoulders. The sleeves were rolled up to his forearms, showcasing the edge of a tattoo that she almost asked to see.

Abby leaned back in her chair, which allowed her to get a better glimpse of Clayton East’s lower half. Tan-colored denim hung low on his trim hips and encased his long legs.

He was every inch the cowboy, and yet the vibe he gave off said he wasn’t entirely comfortable in such attire. Which couldn’t be right. He’d been raised on the ranch. If anyone could wear such clothes with authority, it was Clayton East.

Danny cleared his throat loudly. Her gaze darted to him, and she saw his pointed look. Wanting to kick herself, Abby drew in a deep breath. Just as she was about to start talking, Clayton spoke.

“Cattle rustling is a serious offense.”

Abby’s purse dropped from her hand to the floor. She couldn’t have heard right. “Cattle rustling?”

“We picked up Brice trying to load cattle with the East brand on them into a trailer,” Danny said. “Those with him ran off.”

She was going to be sick. Abby glanced around for a garbage can. This couldn’t be happening. Brice was a little reckless, but weren’t most sixteen-year-olds?

Though she knew that for the lie it was. She’d known from the moment their mother walked out on them that it would be a miracle if Brice graduated high school. He acted out, which was his way of dealing with things.

“I . . . I . . . ,” She shook her head.

What did one say in response to such a statement? Sorry? I don’t know what’s wrong with him?

Danny propped himself on the edge of the table and looked down at her, his hazel eyes filled with concern. “You should’ve come to me if Brice was out of control.”

“He hasn’t been, though,” she argued. And that wasn’t a lie. “Brice’s grades have improved, and he’s really straightened up.”

Danny blew out a long breath. “Is there anyone new he’s been hanging around with?”

“No,” she assured him. “Not that I’ve seen.”

After the last incident when Brice was about to enter a house that his friends had broken into, he’d sworn he wouldn’t get into any more trouble. Abby truly believed that the brush with the law had set him straight.

Her heart sank as she realized that her brother could very well go to jail. She knew she was a poor substitute for their mother, but she’d done the best she could.

“What happens now?” she asked, racking her brain to come up with memories of past shows she’d seen to indicate what would happen next. “Is there a bail hearing or something?”

“That depends on Clayton.”

Just what she needed.

But Abby was willing to do anything for her brothers. She sat up straight and looked Clayton in the eye. “My brother is young and stupid. I’m not making excuses for him, but he’s had a hard time since our mother left. I’m doing everything I can to—”

“You’re raising him?”

She halted at his interruption before nodding. “Both Brice and Caleb.”

He stared at her for a long, silent minute.

Abby wasn’t too proud to beg. And she’d even get on her knees if that was what it took. “Please don’t press charges. I’ll pay back whatever it is you’ve lost with the theft.”

“Abby,” Danny said in a harsh whisper.

“Is that so?” Clayton asked as he crossed his arms over his chest. “You’re really going to repay my family?”

Abby looked between Clayton and Danny before returning her gaze to Clayton and nodding. Her throat clogged because she knew the amount would be enormous, but if it meant her brother wouldn’t go to jail, she’d gladly pay it.

“There were a hundred cows stolen. Thirty of them were recovered when your brother was arrested, which leaves seventy unaccounted for. Let’s round it to $2000 each. That’s $140,000. Not to mention that each of them is about to calf. Each calf will go for a minimum of $500 each. That’s an additional $35,000.”

Oh, God. She would be paying for the rest of her life. And she was fairly certain Clayton wanted the payment now. How in the world was she ever going to come up with that kind of money?

But Clayton East wasn’t finished. He had yet to deliver the killing blow.

“Then there’s Cochise, one of our prized bulls. He’s worth $100,000.”

She put a hand over her mouth as her stomach rebelled. She really was going to be sick, and at the moment, the idea of vomiting on Clayton East sounded tempting.

There was no way she could come up with $275, much less $275,000. Worse, Clayton knew it. It was written all over his face.

Danny rose to his feet and stood at the end of the table. “Abby, you need to get Brice to tell you where the rest of the cattle are.”

The words barely penetrated her mind. She stared at the metal table, her mind blank. Usually, she was able to think up some way to get her brothers out of whatever mess they’d gotten into—and there had been some real doozies.

She’d toiled through various jobs until she landed a position at the CPA company where she was currently employed. Despite the fact that she worked sixty hours a week, they wouldn’t put her on salary because that would mean they’d have to give her health insurance.

Even with those hours and every cent she scraped together, it still didn’t cover their monthly bills. But the one thing she’d promised her brothers was that she would take care of them.

And she had.

Up until today.

She scooped up her purse and stood before facing Danny. “I’d like to see my brother now.”

It took everything within her to walk out of the room without giving the high and mighty Clayton East a piece of her mind.

My Review

Donna Grant gives us an amazing story that exemplifies the true meaning of Christmas. This is a story of loss and of struggle. It’s a story of the strength and power of forgiveness and of promise. It’s also a story of sharing and giving and love and family and it was absolutely beautiful!

This is a long way from the Highlands of Scotland and Ms. Grant’s Dark books, but I find I’m really enjoying her foray into the contemporary genre with her Sons of Texas series and this book, the first in a new series called Heart of Texas!

While Ms. Grant has changed locations, she hasn’t changed the way she puts together an exciting and engaging story and we definitely don’t have a shortage of strong, stubborn heroes!

Abby is an absolute hero in this book as well. Her mother up and left her to care for her two younger brothers when Abby was barely 18 years old. It’s been a struggle, but she’s been able to handle things—barely—so far. Well, until her oldest brother gets in trouble for stealing.

Clayton is a wonderful hero dealing with his own personal demons but he’s obligated to help the family ranch after a series of very unfortunate events. He crosses paths with Abby and her brothers and his well-made plans of one day leaving Texas fly out the window.

This is so much more than just a love story. It’s well-written and crafted beautifully. There’s so much depth and emotion and character growth. And I really enjoyed reading it!

If you need a Christmas romance, look no further! The Christmas Cowboy Hero is exactly what you need!

Keep reading for a look inside Legacy of Chaos!

“Let’s go inside where it’s safe,” Cyan said, turning back to Stryke.

“You go. I’ll catch up.”

She stared at him through the dense tendrils of fog that swirled in the space between them. “I’m not leaving you here alone.”

He didn’t look at her, but she swore he said something like, “I couldn’t save him.”

Not so distantly, a sound like something wet slithering on metal sent a chill up her spine.

“Stryke,” she said with growing urgency. “Let’s go.”

His head swung around, and she drew a sharp breath at the gleaming gold burning in his eyes.

“I can’t,” he growled. “It’s not safe.”

A warm wave of arousal washed over her, and instantly, she understood. “Did you bring your medicine?”

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a crushed injector pen. “This contained four doses.” He closed his eyes. “Blade was right. I’m an arrogant asshole. I couldn’t save him.”

“Er…yeah.” He wasn’t making sense. None of this made sense. Maybe he was experiencing a nervous breakdown. Too much stress or something.

“You did everything you could for Ubundi,” she said calmly, but his eyes popped open, and he looked at her like he didn’t understand.

“Not Ubundi.”

Not Ubundi? What was he talking about?
Something in the fog snarled, and closer, something hissed. She decided to worry about whatever was wrong with Stryke later.

“Okay, we’ll deal with it inside.” He didn’t move, but he did open his eyes. Somehow, they glowed even brighter, a molten gold that made her feel like whiskey flowed through her veins. She burned in the best way. “Stryke.” She extended her hand. “We really have to go inside.”

The wrench clattered to the deck, but he still didn’t move. Fiery turmoil as violent as the stormy sea filled his expression, drawing her in with a sense of almost morbid fascination. She wanted to touch that fire. See how badly it would scorch her.

She stepped closer, her heart pumping so hard she could hear it over the roar of the wind. Desire fluttered in her belly, even as her brain screamed that they were in danger.

Screamed that he was the danger.

“Come on,” she whispered, taking his hand.

His grip snapped closed on her wrist, and he wheeled them both around lightning-fast, slamming her against a huge tank. He pinned her wrists above her head and pressed his big, warm body against hers.

Teeth bared, his face inches from hers, he growled, a sound that relaxed her muscles and turned her core liquid. Oh, wow. So, this was why lust demons were so dangerous.

Here they were in a situation that could get them killed, and all she wanted to do was strip off her clothes and let him do whatever he wanted to her. Right here. In the cold rain. Likely with demons stalking them.

“Go…inside,” he gritted, even as he pushed his pelvis into hers, the hard ridge of his erection making her instinctively roll her hips against it. He sucked in a harsh breath, and the gold in his eyes swirled.

“I’m not going in without you,” she said, her voice sounding more breathless than she’d like.

“Yes, you are.”

Did he understand what he was saying? Did he really want to send her away? What the hell was wrong with him?

Her lust turned to instant fury, something she was far more comfortable with around him. She jerked angrily out of his grip. “What is your deal? If you stay out here, you’ll get killed!”

“I know. But I won’t make it easy on them, and I’ll take out as many of those bastards as I can.”

Oh, gods. He was serious. He really was prepared to fight to the death. And he wasn’t even bothered by the idea. It was all just very ho-hum.

“Stryke, you don’t have to die. Come inside.”

My Review

Legacy of Chaos is a powerful and dynamic read with full throttle action, grief-inducing trauma, unbridled passion, and a shitstorm of apocalyptic proportions!

Stryke is SUCH an asshole. But he’s got a good reason to be. He made a mistake in the past and it cost him the life of his younger brother. Since then, Stryke has put distance between himself and his family and friends, knowing that they are better off without him. Maybe. Maybe not.

Stryke has built himself an empire and makes weapons that can identify and destroy demons,  despite being a demon himself. Stryke wants to annihilate all the “bad” demons to safeguard the world against the scourge of evil. The road to hell is literally paved with good intentions, and the collateral damage is catastrophic.

Stryke’s demon-killing weapons may make his bottom line look great, but they have destroyed Cyan’s life. First with her parents and now with her best friend. If anyone has a reason to want Stryke dead, it’s Cyan. However, his intelligence and his company are much-needed in this new world order. But she’s seriously thinking about kicking him in the nuts. Hard. Me too, sister.

When Cyan’s boss–Kynan–assigns her to work closely on a super secret project with Stryke’s company, this gives her the perfect chance to exact revenge. But, once she checks out Stryke’s state-of-the-art labs and technology, Cyan is too busy salivating over all his “equipment.” And his facilities are nice, too 😉

As Cyan and Stryke spend more time together, she realizes there’s more to him than his ruthless ambition and callous veneer. Stryke is a fundamentally damaged lost soul trying to right a wrong by any means necessary, even at the expense of his own life. It’s both endearing and infuriating. Damn him for making us love him!

Wowee! This story is a crazy train ride full of emotions! From the menacing glares to the steamy power plays, Cyan and Stryke are combustible together! They are burning up the pages with their scorching chemistry, sharp quips, and lively banter. I absolutely love them together!

The storyline is exciting, the characters are entertaining, and the surprises are mind-blowing!

I highly recommend it!

Day 4: The Gingerbread House in Mistletoe Gardens by Jaimie Admans

Happy December!

Today is Day 3 of my holiday reading recommendations.

I'm sharing my review of The Gingerbread House in Mistletoe Gardens!

It's a lovely story set in small town England.

I am a HUGE Jaimie Admans fan. Her stories are fun, funny, and heartfelt!

The Gingerbread House in Mistletoe Gardens is currently FREE on Kindle Unlimited!

About the Book

In Mistletoe Gardens a legend exists: anyone who kisses underneath the mistletoe will be guaranteed another year of love…

When local baker Essie Browne discovers that Mistletoe Gardens is to be demolished in January, she’s determined to save the place she loves so much. So Essie proposes building a life size gingerbread house to bring in the crowds…just how hard can it be?

Well, quite hard actually. Essie can bake gingerbread blindfolded, but she hasn’t got a clue how to build an actual house with it! She needs help – and fast!

Enter local builder, Joss Hallissey. Essie is convinced that with Joss’s help they can pull this off. There’s just one tiny problem: Joss hates Christmas, gingerbread, and… well, just about everything else too.

Joss the Grinch makes it clear that her idea is ludicrous and pointless, but he reluctantly agrees to help with her plan.

Will the gingerbread house be enough to save Mistletoe Gardens? Or will Essie’s chance for a magical kiss under the mistletoe be lost forever?

My Review

An utter delight! A true embodiment of the magic of Christmas!

This is a lovely grumpy/sunny romance set against the backdrop of the small Welsh town of Folkhornton during the Christmas season. The magical Mistletoe Gardens park is in jeopardy of being bulldozed to make way for a new apartment complex nobody wants. A plan forms to make the town’s annual winter wonderland the biggest and best event ever to help save Mistletoe Gardens and Essie foolishly promises to make a life-size gingerbread house to help draw more people to the holiday celebration. Has she bit off more than she can chew? Definitely. Essie will need a Christmas miracle–and a grumpy builder–to pull off this daunting task.

Essie is a beautifully crafted character full of life and promise. She’s a little battered because she’s lost her confidence after some past mistakes but she’s determined to save Mistletoe Gardens. Essie is a multigenerational baker and has made many gingerbread houses over the years, but none to the scale of a full size house! She visits Joseph Hallissey Jr.–owner of a local construction company–in hopes of getting his help with the house, but is quickly and firmly rebuked, repeatedly. Luckily, Essie is determined and fully dedicated to making this gingerbread house the best thing ever, despite all the naysayers.

Joseph–prefers Joss–hates Christmas and people. He’s busy with his own business problems and has no time to help some flighty baker make a life size gingerbread house in three weeks’ time. There’s just no way. Well, until Essie brings him a basket of sweets from the bakery where she works and her annoying persistence–and her kindness–has Joss thinking up some good ideas on how to begin the process. Soon he’s grudgingly swept up in the gingerbread house construction and spending more and more time with Essie. And the more time they spend together, the harder it is for Essie to remain detached. You see, Joss has plans of leaving Folkhornton after the new year, and never coming back. How can Essie not lose her heart to this gruff man, who secretly has a heart of gold? I know I couldn’t!

I mean, I love Essie and Joss together but I was absolutely enamored with the citizens of Folkhornton! So many lovely and quirky people with so much love and generosity and wicked senses of humor! They are the perfect complement to the story and were the royal icing that held everything together so brilliantly!

The Gingerbread House in Mistletoe Gardens is a story full of joy and heartache, of love and loss, of courage and doubt, of faith and hope, and of miracles. It will melt your heart and have you reaching for the tissues! I was quickly swept away into this magical story and held captive until the very end.

Whenever I need a joyful read to brighten up my holiday season, I turn to Jaimie Admans who never disappoints! I highly recommend The Gingerbread House in Mistletoe Gardens!

Day 3: The Mistletoe Melody by Jennifer Snow

Happy December!

Today is Day 3 of my holiday reading recommendations.

I'm sharing my review of The Mistletoe Melody.

This was published November 1, 2014.
While it is a 10 year old story, it's no less amazing.

Now that Bookstagram and BookTok platforms have become popular, we need to spotlight the many wonderful books that have come before! I love showcasing novels that are awesome, regardless of age.

There are so many good books out there and this is one of them!

The Mistletoe Melody is a small town clean romance that'll tug at your heartstrings!

About the Book

'Tis the season of forgiveness…but can she ever forget?

Brad Monroe was truly unbelievable. Blowing back into Brookhollow for three days to film a Christmas special—three years after the accident that killed his best friend…her husband—and expecting Melody to be civil? Please. He'd been the only one who'd survived the tragedy, hightailing it to Nashville and hijacking her dream…Patrick's dream. She'd spent that time grieving, working three jobs, struggling to raise her boys and keep a roof over their heads. Now she was losing ground on all fronts, and not about to forgive and forget. Or give him the one thing that could save them all…

My Review

This is my first read from Jennifer Snow and I thoroughly enjoyed it!

This was a beautiful Christmas story about dealing with devastating loss, finding forgiveness and learning to live and love again. Melody and Brad’s story just broke my heart. Their path is not an easy one to travel but with the support of friends and family, the healing they both so desperately need might actually be possible.

I loved every aspect of this story. The characters were genuine, the plot was engaging and I couldn’t put the book down! I laughed, I cried, I grieved and I smiled right along with Melody, Brad and everyone else in Brookhollow. No words I could write would do the book justice. I give it 100 Stars!

This is a clean romance full of heart and I highly recommend it to everyone! It’s one of the best Christmas romances I’ve ever read!

About the Book

Keyanna “Key” MacKay is used to secrets. Raised by a single father who never divulged his past, it’s only after his death that she finds herself thrust into the world he’d always refused to speak of. With just a childhood bedtime story about a monster that saved her father’s life and the name of her estranged grandmother to go off of, Key has no idea what she’ll find in Scotland. But repeating her father’s mistakes and being rescued by a gorgeous, angry Scotsman—who thinks she’s an idiot—is definitely the last thing she expects.

Lachlan Greer has his own secrets to keep, especially from the bonnie lass he pulls to safety from the slippery shore—a lass with captivating eyes and the last name he’s been taught not to trust. He’s looking for answers as well, and Key’s presence on the grounds they both now occupy presents a real problem. It’s even more troublesome when he gets a front row seat to the lukewarm welcome Key receives from her family; the strange powers she begins to develop; and the fierce determination she brings to every obstacle in her path. Things he shouldn’t care about, and someone he definitely doesn’t find wildly attractive.

When their secrets collide, it becomes clear that Lachlan could hold the answers Keyanna is after—and that she might also be the key to uncovering his. Up against time, mystery, and a centuries old curse, they’ll quickly discover that magic might not only be in fairy tales, and that love can be a real loch-mess.

Keyanna

I never imagined that my death would come by way of a sheep avalanche, but as I watch the tumbling mass of floof barreling down the hill toward the stretch of road I am currently stalled on-it occurs to me that it would at least be a memorable way to go."Christ."

I scramble to get the door of my ancient rental open-the door being on the wrong side, relatively, I might add, which means it's in direct line of impact for the bleating army currently rushing toward me. I manage to snatch my backpack and duck out of the car and half stumble to a safer area, but the sheep, being less murderous than I'd come to believe, actually start to slow as they spill around the aged blue sedan, voicing their irritation of the impediment it makes by loudly trilling more of the hellishly loud bahs.

"Oi!" a voice calls from up the hill. "You all right, lass?"

I bring a hand over my eyes to peer up into the sun, noticing a man with graying hair waving down at me. "Fine," I call back. "They're not carnivorous, are they?"

"Not last I checked," he chuckles, trotting down the hillside. He notices my car in the midst of the sheep-sea, quirking a brow. "Car troubles?"

"I told the woman at the rental place I wasn't good with a stick shift, but apparently, it was all they had left."

"You an American?" He doesn't ask it like it's something to be offended by, but he does sound perplexed. "You're a right ways from the tourist spots, aren't you?"

"Oh, I'm here for . . ." I trail off, deciding it's probably a bad idea to vomit my entire complicated pilgrimage to a veritable stranger. "I'm here to visit family."

His eyes crinkle at the corners, a bright, expressive blue among the weathered lines of his face making him seem genuinely interested. "Is that right? And who might you belong to? I know everyone around these parts."

I hesitate, again considering the ramifications of telling a stranger about my spur-of-the-moment reunion with my estranged family before they know about it. In the end, I reason that, if nothing else, there's a good chance I will reach my grandmother's house before this man can wade out of his pile of sheep.

"The MacKays," I tell him. "Rhona MacKay?"

"Oh, aye, aye, I know Rhona! Is she your granny, then? Would that make Duncan your da?" He squints as if trying to make the connection. "You've got the look of him. Didn't know he had any weans when he ran off to America."

I try to process all of this; I am deciding to take his stream of consciousness as overt friendliness and not some backhanded comment on my father's complicated history with his family. He must notice my stunned expression, though, because he waves a hand back and forth.

"Listen to me, babbling on. Sorry. Don't get many newcomers in Greerloch." He wipes his hand on the front of his worn flannel shirt, extending it after. "Hamish Campbell. I live over the hill there with this lot." He nods back toward the still-bleating horde. "Pleased to meet you."

I take his hand, still reeling from the influx of conversation. People don't just chat like this back in New York. "I'm . . . Key. Key MacKay. Well, Keyanna, actually, but everyone calls me Key."

"Key," he echoes. "I like it. You remind me of Rhona now that I've had a proper look at you. You've got the eyes."

I don't exactly know how to feel about looking like a woman who hasn't wanted anything to do with me for my entire twenty-seven years, but I manage a tight smile regardless. "How nice."

He frowns at his brood, looking sympathetic. "I gather you'd like to be on your way, aye? Your granny is probably expecting you."

I don't correct him, giving a noncommittal shrug instead.

"Might take me a wee bit to get the herd to move along, but I can take a look at your car if you like? I'm right handy when I aim to be."

"That would be amazing actually," I sigh in relief. "If it's really no trouble?"

"No trouble at all." He waves me off. "You just wait right there, and I will have you right as rain within the hour."

I glance across the rolling hills and lush green that spill all around us, biting my lip as I pull out my phone. "You don't happen to know how far"-I squint at the notes on my screen-"Scall-an-jull Cove is, would you?"

Mr. Campbell laughs. "I grant ya, that's a hard one. It's Skallangal Cove, love." He says it like: scall-an-gale, which sounds much nicer than my butchered attempt. "You're after Nessie, then, aye?"

"I . . . what?"

Another chuckle. "They don't call it 'cove of the fear' for nothing. I've chased many a wean from that cove. Rocks are too rough there, you see? S'not safe."

"Oh, it was just a place my dad mentioned . . ."

"Oh, aye, I reckon he did. Duncan always claimed he saw the beast. Swore on it, if you got him good and steamin'."

"Steaming?"

"That's drunk to you, hen."

Hen?

Probably be here all day if I stop him for a slang lesson every time it comes up.

"You saw my dad drunk?"

"A time or two. Before he took off." Mr. Campbell scratches at his jaw. "I was sad to see him go. How's the auld boy getting along, then? He not come with you?"
I feel a twinge of pain in my chest; even after six months, it still hurts to think he can't be here with me. "He . . . passed," I tell him. "In the spring."

"Ah, lass." Hamish sighs, looking truly grieved by the news. "I am sorry to hear that. He was a good man, your da. Can I ask how he went?"

"Pneumonia," I explain. "He was diagnosed with Alzheimer's a few years ago, and he just sort of . . . degenerated. He came down with pneumonia after a bad winter, and he-" I have to clear my throat, feeling it grow thicker. "He didn't recover."

"Oh, hen." Hamish's blue eyes glitter with genuine emotion, which only worsens the pressure I'm feeling in my chest. Hamish reaches into his jacket pocket to retrieve a handkerchief, rubbing at his nose briefly before stowing it away. "I'm sorry, love. And your mum? We all heard the stories about how Duncan ran off with a wily American-is she not here with you?"

He's determined to pick at all my scabs today, isn't he?

"My mother died giving birth to me," I manage stiffly.

Hamish blows out a breath. "Aye, I've really stepped innit, haven't I? Forgive me for being a nosy bastard." He shakes his head, clearing his throat as he gestures to my car. "How's about I get to work on this, then? There's some lovely views from the hill there"-he points across the lush green expanse stretching beyond the little knoll his sheep are currently crowding-"and your cove is nigh a mile"-he turns his finger in the other direction-"that way." He winks. "If you're brave enough, mind you."

I chuckle softly. "I'm not afraid."

"Well, mind the rocks, would you? It really is unsafe. Keep to the shore, aye?"

"I will," I assure him. "And thank you for your help."

He waves me off. "Think nothing of it. We're a close-knit group here in Greerloch, and you're family apparently! Don't you worry, I'll have this fixed up in no time."

He turns to shoo away one of the bleating fluff-monsters currently nibbling at his coat hem, pushing his way through the masses toward my poor, pathetic rental car. I watch him for a moment, wondering if it's actually wise to leave my car with some stranger, but honestly, what choice do I have? It's not like I can fix it myself, and my only other alternative is to lock myself inside and hope someone else comes along. I let my eyes sweep across the sprawling, endless green of the landscape, not seeing any signs of life outside of Hamish and his horde.

I guess that's what the rental insurance is for.

I turn toward the direction he pointed out, which leads to the massive hill that supposedly hides the way to Skallangal Cove, thinking that now is just as good a time as any. I hoist my backpack up higher onto my shoulders-taking a deep breath and letting it out as I turn toward the hill.

Onwards and upwards, I guess.

I doubt Hamish’s “nigh a mile” more and more as I trek across the grass; the hill itself was a feat, less of a “hill” up close and more of a small mountain, really. My thighs burn with effort as I walk, and I’m sure my watch is probably organizing me a pizza party for the overabundance of steps I’m getting in today. But when I finally see the glittering surface of the loch come into view, the sun shining on the small waves and making them sparkle, I think maybe it was worth all the steps.

Ever since I set foot in Scotland, I can't seem to get over how beautiful it is. The land itself seems to be alive all around me-almost as if I can feel the hum of life in the air and beneath my feet. The colors feel more vibrant, the sights and sounds more lovely, and I can see it, I think. Feel it, even. Why my father was so wistful when he spoke of his homeland.

There are signs as I get closer-the standard "Keep Out" and "Danger" posted along the barely there path that leads onto the rocky shore-but given that there isn't a single soul for miles, it would seem, I think I'm probably fine to explore a little. I mean, who's going to tell me I can't? Hamish's sheep?

There are a good number of large rocks jutting up at the water's edge, giving the shore a craggy effect that I can definitely see being a problem for kids wanting to adventure onto them. For a moment, I can only stare at the quiet, rolling water that gently ebbs back and forth against the shore, struck with a sudden memory that isn't mine-one that feels like mine for as many times as I've heard my dad recount it.

He was just there. Just beyond the shore. I'd slipped on the rocks, see? I thought I'd drown . . . but he saved me. Me! Of all people . . .

As a kid, the story of my dad's salvation at the hands of some mythical beast had been thrilling. I remember late nights of begging him to hear it "just one more time"-anything to avoid bedtime. Sometimes, I can still hear his voice, soft and comforting, as he lulled me to sleep. Still feel his fingers on my brow, pushing my curls away from my face as my eyes drifted shut.

In the end, his stories were all he had.

I drop my backpack onto the ground and start to dig through it, my hands shaking a little as I pull out the black capsule.

"Hey, Dad," I mutter, rubbing my thumbs across the sleek curve of the urn. "Look where we are." I straighten, holding it close to my chest as I turn back to the water. "I brought you back," I say to the air. "Just like I said I would."

A deep ache settles in my chest and lower in my stomach; I thought I would find more peace here, knowing I was giving him the send-off he wanted. I can't even be sure if this is what he actually wanted or if it was just more ramblings brought on by the slow loss of his mind, but it feels right, I think. Sure, he never spoke of his family, or of his life here beyond silly childhood stories-but I could tell he missed it. There was a sadness in his voice sometimes that I could hear no matter how hard he tried to hide it.

I realize after a few minutes that I'm just standing here, that I'm stalling, really. It's silly; I quit my job, flew across the ocean, practically uprooted my entire life just to come here, and now that I'm here . . . I'm not sure if I can do it.

The wind picks up, whipping my sun-blazed curls around my face, and I tell myself that it's just the brightness out here that's making my eyes water. I can do this, damnit.

I turn to try and scope out a good place; I've never spread someone's ashes before, obviously, but it doesn't feel very special to just walk up to the shoreline and dump my dad out onto the algae. Surely there has to be a better way.

With that in mind, I start pacing along the edge of the water, nearing the expanse of jutting rocks that the signs and Hamish and probably God at this point have warned me about. There's a relatively flat one only a few steps out, just a short climb and a few hops away from shore. Surely I can manage that. I'm not a kid, after all.

I hold my dad tighter as I carefully step out onto the raised stone that leads toward the larger flat rock, hovering with one foot still on the shore as I test my balance. My sneakers aren't the best choice for this, and I'm wishing now that I'd read a few more travel blogs about dressing for Scotland. Not, I think, that any of them would have accounted for rock climbing on the coast of Loch Ness. I curl my fingers to grip my dad's urn as I blow out a breath, readying to step farther onto the rocks and finish this so I can head off to meet the family. Something else I'm not sure I'm looking forward to.

I move to take another step, feeling the soles of my shoes slip against the wet surface as my balance suddenly becomes off-kilter. A surge of panic jolts through me as I start to fall backward-but I'm snatched away before that happens.

"Hey!"

Something thick winds around my waist, hauling me backward, using enough power that I nearly stumble as I'm forced back to both feet on the shore. The thick something-an arm, I realize-lingers for only a moment before releasing me, and I whirl around with hot anger flooding my cheeks as I prepare to tell off whoever interfered.

And then, funnily enough, I seem to forget how to use words.

My Review

A Partridge in Sunshine Bay is a beautiful holiday read that pulled at my heartstrings and left me a tear-stained mess.

I really enjoyed learning about Vivian and the amazing life and love she and her husband shared. Carrying on after he passed away is the hardest thing Vivian has to do, and she doesn’t want to. Drowning in grief, it takes family, friends, and a few surprises to remind Vivian of her purpose and help recapture her holiday spirit.

The characters are easily relatable and the storyline is heartwarming and hopeful. I’d definitely visit Sunshine Bay again.

While the holiday season brings happiness and joy to many, for others it’s a tough time of year. Whether it’s grieving a loss, remembering a hurtful past, or when loneliness is at its loudest. This story recognizes that pain and repurposes it into hope.

I highly recommend A Partridge in Sunshine Bay to all readers.
